can I still play CS on a potato?
I've been playing the game since I was in Middle school. I could never afford a decent computer, still can't. I'm excited for the update, gonna get back into it as I haven't played for a couple weeks. thing is I play on my ♥♥♥♥♥♥ laptop. all i see are graphical updates, but can I still rock the house with an HP laptop?

The game is badly optimized, I play on a GTX 1650, I5 9300h, 16GB Ram Laptop, and it still runs like shi*, so I think you should try lowering everything and it may run good on small maps.

An actual potato? Like the ones that fries are made of? No. Not even 1.6 is that optimised.
At the moment it seems it doesn't run well on potato. I have Intel Xeon X3470 2.93ghz quad-core running at 3.6ghz (if I recall it's basically same as i5 760 without overclocked); 32GB DDR3 @ 1800mhz, GTX 1660S (Asus TUF OC) for GPU. I will have to say I've still got Win7, cause I was bound to update it before end of the year, so I'm only testing vs. bots right now just to see the performance. I was supposed to update Win before end of the year when Steam support ends for Win7, but I will probably update within few weeks just to see if CS2 improves solely over Windows update to Win10. However, much as I read about people having performance issues on Win10/11 and older gear, I'm not too hopeful it will solve the problem, but I hope so.

Regardless, before CSGO to CS2 update I was running around 145-165fps solid on 1080p no drops (overall 140-250fps, but for aforementioned I'm talking about normal area with longer view). For as it stands with CS2, I'm running 45-60fps with some major drops and it goes to 35fps sometimes on normal areas. That ~50fps feels more like 20-30fps, though, because it's pretty choppy in weird way.

Regardless, with my potato it's unplayable now. I can play PUBG all right on low settings, but CS2 seem way heavier. Will see if update to Win10 helps. My gfx drivers are dec2022, cause newer ones won't install anymore. Not that old, but with brand new game maybe newest ones after Win update will solve something, always a chance.

Regardless I feel whatever I tested gives good impression so far, and it seems that on older or low-end gear fps drop from CSGO to CS2 is major as I'm getting only 25-40% of frames vs. before, which also have major drop-downs and strange stutter making them feel less than it actually is.

My CPU is utilised 35-55% (overall %) on latest tests to run CS2 and no overheating problems.

At the moment if you've got specs along the lines like mine, forget about it. There's always chance they will optimise it later for lower end spec, in case there's obvious optimization issue that can be solved with gear similar to mine. Maybe like, if old quad-cores don't take full advantage of their tech or something.

Must be young. Sorry to say this but Old computers and software dont last forever and as time goes on you need new equipment to run things. Consoles like the last generation are already over 10 years old and they are holding back development time for newer and better games, which is why they start to lose support overtime. Maybe it truly is time to get a new pc and perhaps do some work and make some money.

Get a job. Poland is not 3rd world banana republic with super small wages. You should be at least okay.
