Because all those mmorpg's that came with dvd's couldn't either, like wow, rf online, aion, lineage, etc., league of legends couldn't update itself either right because it had a dvd release? physical games serve as license keys. Unless you're buying a PC game without DRM (like games from GOG), or physical games for legacy consoles, you don't really own your own games.
