I recently got a recoil case drop but I cant open it, I thought that the cases were free if you had prime?

If you don't have prime, you don't even get any cases.
Yes, you need a key for any weapon case.

At least you can sell the case in community market.

Chances to get "gold" item (knife / gloves) are about 0.26%.
So in theory you can open even 1000 cases and still don't get the "gold" item.

just sell the case. cases have a low chance of actually making you a profit, especially if you only open one.
