How to adjust brightness in Config?

Just got a new PC and while setting up my csgo I ran into problems with the gamma settings. how does the brightness option in game translate into the config?

I have to assign a value to mat_monitor gamma but no matter what number I type in the gamma ingame always goes to max. what is a reasonable number for "not burning my eyes out" brightness and do I have to change other settings to get there?

right click csgo.exe -> Compatibility and look to see if theres checkmark in "Disable fullscreen optimizations" if there is, try remove it.

default value is mat_monitorgamma 2

i use 1.803286

many use 1.6

(typically 2.2 for CRT and 1.7 for LCD) so the range seems to be 1.6 --> 2.2. lower is lighter

make autoexec and put the command there


edit: apparently you have to also use mat_monitorgamma_tv_enabled "0" so it doesnt reset everytime u launch/alttab csgo. its weird since monitorgamma is already in autoexec but w/e, just to be safe put both into autoexec like:
