Memory Leak?
Within the last day, I have been experiencing a horrible bug that causes CS:GO to use all of my RAM within about two minutes. After that two minutes, if I alt tab out, my memory status returns to normal and CS:GO becomes less laggy. I tried changing some of my video settings to see if that would work but to no avail. Thank you in advance!

Turns out that this is not CS:GO exclusive. I started a game of Insurgency as well and the same thing started to happen. Any ideas on how to fix this??? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

After doing some testing, I've discovered that CS:GO leaks memory when only in fullscreen windowed mode, but not in regular windowed mode or fullscreen mode. Not sure why this is.

I think I got a similar issue since recently

How much memory do you have? You alt tab out, then back in? How do you know its "less laggy"?

Unlikely its a memory leak because once a process has memory it typically doesn't free it up, even if you alt tab out. That would mean the system would have to swap entire processes everytime you alt tab.

I have 16gb of RAM. Yeah I have the task manager open and I am checking the RAM graph and as soon as I tab out to check it, the graph goes back down to probably where it should be. The graph is chilling at the top and then as soon as I tab out to check it, it plummets back to the bottom.

I would recommend calling a plumber to fix that leak.
And download some more RAM from totallynotavirus.com/downloadram
Sorry that this isn't very helpful

Yeah the system actually does TRIM memory. I was mistaken.

Youd have to check out whats eating that RAM up. CSGO specifically? When you TAB out of any program, some of the memory is flagged and returned for available use by the system, but it usually isn't all that much. The drop in pages is usually the trimming alogrithms used by the operating system. Memory is "freed" up that hasn't been "touched" by the process in long time (or based on w/e algorithm windows uses). I agree that if all 16 gigs were used by CSGO, it would be an issue. Certainly either a memory leak by that process, or from some supporting function in that process.

You said this happens in windowed mode fullscreen? ILl have to try it.

it wasn't csgo, it was the steamwebservice, also happens to me from time to time.

What I do to avoid this is.. I simply reinstall steam.

Just keep your steamapps / userdata / <check other places what folders to keep when reinstalling steam>

Huh, interesting. Thank you for the help!

Yeah it was really weird. I changed it to fullscreen mode and it was fine.

my bad, it was "steam web helper"

it simply east up all of your available ram, and keeps it eaten, and doesn't let go. It's like a hungry dog not giving up on that big bone you are trying to take away from him.

Edit: actually, it can be csgo as well, can happen in everything. Usually it's a fault on your end, and maybe the data protection ram (ram that should NEVER crash, that's why it's expensive af, but weaker than normal ram) might be able to handle memory leaks better, but the thing about the "special ram" is something I just pulled out of my arse, so don't take it seriously.

Yeah its also strange that you said you were in fullscreen windowed mode? That shouldn't TRIM anything from a process. So i take my previous post back. The ONLY time windows trims a process is when its backgrounded from a fullscreen mode.

You shouldn't have seen that happen. So a memory leak from CSGO is, as i said, unlikely. Im currently testing it and i see no reduction in memory usage when in FS windowed mode.
