ELO Rating - How Does It Work
Hey guys, i've recently come back to CS:GO and got right back into competative, previously i only made it to S3/4, and after my few matches I played when I came back into the game, I was placed at S2.

I just had a few questions on Ranking and how it works.

Since I've became S2, I have played probably close to 30-40+ comp games, and of those, there is probably about 20 wins, though I still havent moved in rank.

My friend that I am usually grouped up with came back and got placed into S3 (He used to be LEM so its understandable that he starts higher) but he has already moved onto S4, and has played substantially less than myself.

How did he rank up faster? Is there ways to rank up faster? Etc.

My second question was regarding the difficulting of matchmaking in CS:GO.

What I mean by this is i've noticed a lot that in a lot of games, my enemy team is no better than playing offline with easy bots, honestly just a joke for competative. But if I were to win the hypothetical match, I would than get placed against people who could 1 tap me from across the map. It seems that its very hard to get games where there is a steady increase in difficulty or decrease, it's: we either 16-0 or get 16-0'd

(Obviously not actually 16-0'ing teams, but an average game with the EASY opponents would be probably 16-5, and against the 1 tap gods probably 3-16)

What is everyones thoughts on the ELO system and the matchmaking system in CS:GO? Was it different previously and if so, was the change better or worse compared to todays matchmaking?

Hello. Captain Obvious here.

Counter Strike Global Offensive Matchmaking system does use a modified Elo system called glicko-2 which is also modified so it fits into CS. The system display ranks - but in the background people have points. While the system is called "heavily modified glicko-2" system, it still uses "elo rating points". It's kinda like walking: You walk in mp/h or km/h. When you drive with a car you're basically heavily modified, but you still drive in mp/h or km/h. So the measure unit is still the same.

So don't listen to people saying CSGO mm doesn't use elo rating. They're wrong.

_______________

To your question of how the ranking system works: To be honest. Nobody beside some very few valve employees know that. All we can tell is that it is intellgent enough to see your performance and how consistent you're and based on that your rank decrease, rise or stay the same. Every argument like "all what matters are wins" or "you need to have mvps" or "as many kills as possible" are just assumptions without any facts.

So what does it mean for you? Quite simple: Don't waste any moment in thinking about the system or your rank. All what matter is that you've fun. And when you have the motivation to get a higher rank, forgot about that motivation and change your motivation to something else: Get better. Improve your skill. Be open minded. The rank is just the result of your skill. When you aim for good grades in school your also don't aim for the points, you aim for knowledge, right?

The difficulty of CSGO mm is completely random. CSGo try to find equal skilled player but it's simply not possible because of smurfs, people who deranked during rank decay, people who trained a lot and are way better than before and so far and so furth. Basically if you wanna have a challenge you've to play against other people on third party websites because the motivation, mentality and attitude from people playing there is different. I always show this selfmade paint pic for that:
https://imgur.com/2PBtg2R

As you can see, the skill difference based on max skillcap isn't that high in matchmaking. Obviously this is just average so some people are worse or better. But even a low skilled player who decide to quit MM and start playing on third party websites is open minded enough to be better than a global player. It's the attitude of a person what matters and people bragging about their MM rank just hit a mental wall and think they're the best just because they got a rank there. The whole competition in CS MM is simply not that good.

My thoughts about the MM ranking system is pretty simple: I like it. I like it more than faceits elo system because in MM personal performance also matters. In faceit basically the system calculate how much elo points your team and the enemy team has and based on that depending on only winning/losing you earn or lose points. When booth teams are equal strong the winning team gets 25 points, the losing team lose 25 points. It can change up to 40 points as far as I know. Personal performance and how close the game was doesn't matter there. In CSGO MM it's different. Team- and personal performance matters. For a PUG system it's way better. Obviously for a team oriented league system it's better to rate the whole clan/team instead of every single player. But faceit is also just pugging.

So all in all: Ranks - no matter if we talk about MM, Faceit or whatever system simply don't matter. What matters is your attitude, mentality, team oriented gameplay, that you're open minded and that you improve your skill and focus on all that instead of any ranks or level. And when you want even higher goals, then play in leagues. There team ranks matters. You don't need to be proud of global - or faceit level 10. The real competition is playing as a team against other teams in leagues. And people there can be proud when they do tiny steps.

It depends on your win/loss ratio. If you win 20 games but lose 30, you aren’t going to rank up any time soon. But if you win 20 and lose 10, you have a good chance of ranking up.

I'm pretty sure the fastest way to rank is to always be top 1 in the game, having more kills and MVP's than others, and win with that.

why would your rank change when you win 50% of your games?

that implies you are right where you should be

Winnig 5/6 games straight as top/2nd frag and 3/4 mvps will be enough to rank up.
Wit Peerd 14 ENE 2019 a las 7:30 a. m.
Within the same match, win loss ratio as mentioned before but I also did read a guide that stated your individual MVP stars help you gain more points on a winning round (individually). I think kd ratio doesnt matter. So if your friend gained more stars than you in the same match he will be climbing faster.

its not always. it depends on the strength of the other team, strength of your team, mvp, adr, etc its a lot more complicated than people think

This is extremely helpful man, thank you!

I have tons of fun when i play even when im screaming "F THIS GUY" who 1 taps me from across the map, and even though i am losing I am seeing that I am improving. I mean like... maybe a week ago I couldnt get any kills but im slowly learning recoil patterns, my crosshair placement is getting slowly better and my reflexes are improving.

I might have to check out those 3rd party sites but i might still give it a little bit for that until im 100% confident in my skills.

Also, thanks for not talking or commenting like I am a complete idiot, I am an actual silver player but i've done enough research to see that CS:GO does us a modified ELO system but all the posts I saw were over a year old so I wasnt sure if any new infomation was given on them

You're welcome buddy. :)

Yeah it's a long way in order to improve. Take every step as a success! And it's good when you can actually see how you improve on every aspect. Keep goin' :)

And yes, you should wait a bit before you start playing on third party websites. As you correctly said: Get confident with your skills. Confidence is very important.

Have a good night.
