I got my first gloves today, created my account in 2020 and started actively playing in the end of last year. I think the odds of getting a gold on new accounts is way higher, since this was only my 10th case (I think) and I already got a gold, I can definitely agree.
The thing is that, most of the times, you won't get anything valuable from the case you're opening. So, as long as you know that the money that you're spending won't go anywhere, feel free to try and see if you get sth.
And as some of the previous people mentioned, it is better if you buy the skin you want instead of gambling for it.
Pretend you open 4 cases. This does not put you at 1/380; the chance is still 1/384.
If we're talking about real numbers, you can realistically open 6,000,000 cases and not get a knife. Similarly, you can open 5 cases and get 5 knives. Both are incredibly unlikely but it's also highly unlikely you will make your money back by the time you get a knife or two or three.
I've blown $3,000 on cases and gotten 1 knife.... a rust coat ursus. Nice. -$2800, but I traded it back to steam so actually -$3,000 since you can't withdrawal money from steam.
