he could have not enough ram. slow ram. slow hdd. slow cpu.
i would install "latencymon" . this program is tracking all executions and can track which component is the slowest one.

or even sound problems, lot of similar issues do that.
But i guess overheating is most common, specially since you say fps drop.
The components do dips in fps/performance to stop overheating themselves. ANd this happens when the computer needs to be more active, hence when enemys pop in your view.
you checked your temperature as well?
