Explanation
Since you are using headphones with 5.1 surround sound settings turned on in game, the software will be sending sounds processed at frequeancies meant to process 5.1 chanels of audio. That is 6 seprate positional channels of audio you are trying to push through only 2 speakers (stereo). The result is that the headphones you are using will be quieter because they are trying to process those sounds with 3 missing speakers in the configuration.
Using HRTF mode will better simulate surround sound affect through your headphones due to the way it manipulates sound frequencies so precisely, that your ears will percieve a sound made behind you in game as being directly behind you.
