Play with your equalizer a bit.
Or...
Turn up the volume to max, to make yourself deaf for gunshots as fast as possible ..so you can only hear footsteps.
.....or go knife/taser only.
map_background de_dust2 deathmatch add it to console when in main menu.
You can concentrate better hearing the sounds only.
Because good headset has a flat response line across all the frequencies. And that cannot be found, or nowhere near that for less than multiple hundreds of $. Tens of thousands for actual flat line response line.
But for gaming there is no such thing as "good headset" as sound is nowhere near deep, it's a relatively low lvl audio quality. Good headset actually does nothing for you, 100$ or 300$ "gaming" headset does nothing in terms of advantage. Not even those actual pro headsets that are 20 000 - 40 000$. No advantage.
But if you want to cheat with audio you can play with equalizer, find which frequency footsteps are at and increase that. But imo that is cheating, point of gunfire being louder is a balance feature and you are not supposed to hear footsteps much or any during a flat out combat.
But y'know, "if it's not caught by anti-cheat then it's not cheating" logic is applied by many, I prefer the "if it gives an unfair advantage then it's a cheat".
And when you start looking for hardware advantage it kinda suggests that you are done progressing your self which is alarming...
Realistically I cannot see gunfire being a problem unless you spray the whole game for some reason. On high level, if you don't kill in 4-5 bullet spray you are 100% dead. If you don't hit headshot you are like 50% dead. 5 bullets are half the second with most guns, that's how long you should not have the audio, or you are dead and you no longer need audio.
