What is Duped skin?
Last night in a casual game 2-3 guys talking about duped skin. They were talking very seriously for whole match like this topic is more important than the COVID.
Can anyone tell me what duped skin means? Does it exist or just a made up name to scam new people?

In the past there were duplicate items. Unable to cancel a trade, Valve simply make a duplicate item for scam victims. Same float, same wear, etc. In that era, a duplicated Dragon Lore (Factory New) cost only $400 while a non duplicate cost $2000.

A few years later, Valve decide to remove duplication to protect the market, but it came a period where smart scammers will message you that your items were duplicated and will be removed unless you trade it to "verify". The victim then send their item over and never get it back.

Fast forward to now, new skins released today will never be duplicated. As more accounts were banned by vac, more duplicates were removed each day. Today almost all of the items are non duplicate. People have a peace of mind, and items are all expensive. However, if you're buying a very old skin such as AK serpent, there is still a need to check the skin float for duplication.

^^% Not rlly lol, a duped item comes from steam itself, basically say someone scams a person for a Karambit ruby, this person goes to steam and tells them they were scammed, steam then contacts said “scammer” and of course the scammer will say it was a regular trade, steam will then not be able to decide what happened and will duplicate the item and give it back to the person who was “scammed” in the past people abused this situation and had steam duplicate their items by sending it to a friend and claiming they were scammed as steam will not punish either party, now adays this situation is uncommon but there are many items which are duplicated and not unique meaning they have the same pattern and same float value as another thus causing them to lose value, you can see where an item originated from (craft, dupe, or unboxed) with CSGOTrader.app (which is what I use) let me know if this helps and feel free to contact me for trade tips etc !!!!

The other person who commented is by the way, entirely wrong, I recommend you talk to people with an actual inventory and trade experience, there is a server named “TGP” “The global paradise trade server” where all reliable traders go to, you can also ask for information here it is a very experienced and helpful kind community.

It is not made up, every skin had an origin and often if it’s more unique or rare it becomes far far more valuable !

Steam quit restoring items years ago. That was the only way to dupe items. And Steam does not copy+paste items anymore.

Someone talking about duping right now only wants to make you send him your stuff for free.
Also that 7days tradehold made it near impossible to fake dupe to lure victims in.

Aware, however those duped items still exist and are sold daily, I addressed the fact they no longer do this, but duped items are still far less valuable and there are ways to check the origin of an item, it’s not a scam, people want skins that are one and only not that have an exact replica

But i don't think steam support duplicates any lost skins from trade scams.
back in 2018 i was API scammed for a knife and contacted supportfor help. They said it's out of question to duplicate or bring back item as this violates their user trade policy. Eveni asked them help after the scammer got trade banned. Still no helpful response from steam.
I don't know if it's true that steam duplicates skins to recover it from scammers.

Far less valuable, lol. 99% of people don't give a flying ♥♥♥♥ whether its duped or not.

Yeah a lot of people don’t, but a lot of people do, maybe your not trading with the right people, it’s harder to sell a duped item, as some people check, it makes them far less rare
Xreoy Nov 5, 2020 @ 9:05pm
A duped item is worse than a market item that is base and not necessarily special for its specific class
Xreoy Nov 5, 2020 @ 9:30pm
In the past they duped items, these items will always and forever be duped, thus there is an exact duplicate of them, Thus lowering their rarity from 0% to 50%, it can significantly drop value for some traders, trade with people who will give you the most that you want, if someone won’t trade because something is duped or not specifically rare etc, simply be respectful and don’t trade with them

If I was buying a 1/2 skin for example, if it’s duped, it’s a deal breaker unless it’s now 1/1
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

^^^^ it depends on the item, if you have a common item I won’t care if it’s duped
