144 hz on lenovo y520 laptop with benq xl2411 monitor.

I recently bought a xl2411 benq monitor for my laptop so i could play at 144 hz, i only have it connected with a HDMI 2.0 cable and im only able to pull out 120 hz on 1024 x 768. But when i switch from the normal 60 hz to 120 hz the screen becomes centeret and small in the middle of the screen with blackbars all round it, even on the desktop and ofcourse also ingame. How am i able to get the 120 hz and still play with a stretched screen on that resolution? Should i also get an usb-c to dvi-d adapter to be able to pull out 144 hz or is the hdmi the same thing?

HDMI won't do 144hz, only a DisplayPort cable will support 144hz.

EDIT:

You're only getting 120hz, because that's as high as HDMI will support.

I dont have a Displayport in my laptop. Ive read that i might be able to do it through the usb-c to an dvi-d. But i dont want to buy it if it wont help anyways. But anyway the 120 hz from the hdmi is decent if i was able to get a normal looking screen, and not a tiny half size screen. Any ideas how to stretch it ?

My advice would be to return the monitor, and save that money toward a new laptop with a 144hz display. Stretching it is going to look awful.

I'm not going to lie, I had no clue that was the case because I was going to buy a 144 HZ 1440p, or possibly 4k display. And I don't own a display cable I only have an HDMI. I'm actually glad I clicked on this post lol.

Also, make sure you get a monitor that supports whatever anti screen tearing tech your GPU has...

Nvidia = G Sync
AMD = Free Sync

Yeah, with GSync it ends up being a crap ton expensive, so I'm probably going to go with a 2560 x 1440p display at 144HZ, just because my build isn't really a 4K machine, I only have one GTX 1070. It's more of a 1440p gaming rig. But yeah, I hate screen tearing so I'll probably buy those monitors on Amazon, or maybe when blackfriday hits I can get a good sale on one.
