Do report bots still work?

I was playing with a friend and two guys in the enemy team told me that they report botted me because I was cheating. I don't think I'll get banned because I didn't cheat nor did anything that looks like cheating but I'm still curious.

They never did, all they did was track said account and once they got banned they claimed to be why

Even if they did work. the chance that you would be banned is low, as reports make you "the suspect" in an overwatch case, where other players have to judge if you are cheating or not

Valve says no, they don‘t work.
But I played against a cheater a couple of days ago and a teammate said he would report bot him. The guy wasn‘t blatant, but he gave away his walls by prefiring only spots where actually sbd was, even if they were random and uncommon. 20 minutes after the match the cheater had a game ban on his profile. Might be coincidence, but maybe the bot actually worked. I don‘t know.

No, they don't. Reporting only increases your overwatch weight (I believe). If you're found out to be legit in overwatch, you won't be vac4hac.

Not only coincidence but impossible.
- Reports don't issue bans
- OW cases takes their time to handle
- All bans are also delayed

Most they could do is to get a match viewed by Overwatch and that's it. If you're not cheating you have nothing to worry about.

John Mcdonald confirmed they were working even in aug 2020 and says that it would be difficult to say they can be patched completely. Report bots aren't reporting from the steam profile lol. From my understanding of it, there are some basic ones that just check if you ever join a casual gamemode or community server and then have bots join that server to report you. Because of that a recent competitive game you played will be sent into ow.
More "advanced" ones might have higher level/somewhat active steam accounts with different ips and everything doing reports with slight delays after each report instead of throwaway accounts with the same ip reporting you instantly or whatever.

One way to check if you have been botted is by looking at the players in your recently played games.

If it looks something like that then it means either you or someone in your game was reportbotted with some basic/meme reportbot. With the proper ones it would probably be harder to tell since the profiles would look like they belong to actual players.
