CSGO : ping problem
So, I'm at a loss here. I have 1GB ATT Uverse fiber internet in the Chicago-land area. I used to be able to play on MM and casual CSGO servers and get anywhere from 2MS to 20ishMS ping. About 2 months ago, something changed and I'm unable to connect to any official servers with under a 50 ping. I called ATT, after almost 2 hours on the phone and 6 techs later, they said this is not an ATT issue because it's after their hand off.

I used WireShark to pull the last IP from the official MM server I played on. The server appears to be located in the Chicago area, there is no way my ping should be over 20MS since it used to be at around 5MS. Does anyone have any idea who I need to contact to fix this? Steam support is telling me it's not their issue, but Steam seems to be the only issue. Everything else works fine.

Here is a tracert from the last IP:

Well the first thing I notice is your traceroute shows a dropped packet. Because of this, I'm wondering if you're connected via Ethernet or Wi-Fi?
If Wi-Fi, what wireless channel and frequency?
If Ethernet, which category of cord (Cat5e, Cat6, etc), does it support Gigabit Ethernet (usually says on the cord), is it shielded (the metalic cover at the connecting ends), and how long is it?

Also, since you're using AT&T, is your Internet coming from a Satellite dish and/or a modem/router?

Thanks for the reply. I believe the cable is cat 5e. When I do speed tests, it varies but normally around 700-800 down and at least 400 up. I tested with a laptop and have the same issue.

U-verse requires their own all in one gateway that serves as a router/modem/everything. All hardware seems to be fine. Trace routes from websites are ok.

Can you tell me what Ethernet card you use? You can find it in the Adapter options in Network and Sharing centre.

Well 50 ping isn't bad, but yeah you should be getting like 2 ping. That's weird. I'm not sure why that's happening since I don't have fiber. But you're lucky. I can't get fiber where I live anymore. And my ping goes from 40-1000 at times.

It’s a Intel I211 gigabit card. The issue I’m having seems to be isolated to csgo, everything else works fine. Everything from the trace route shows ATT is ok until the handoff.

This might not be important, but may be used for future reference: Your Ethernet card doesn't support Fiber Channel over Ethernet.

Anyways, I'm assuming your drivers are up to date as Intel released a driver update for many cards including yours at 30 May 2018. If not, install them as they usually fix problems related to specific applications like yours.

Just updated to latest driver - same error.

This seems to be a routing issue. Any network pros in here that can help? Should I be contacted whoever Telia is since that’s where the high latency starts?

TheDude -

Thanks. A few weeks ago I installed Steam and CSGO on a new laptop to test. I had the same exact error and ping issue.

I have not tried that. Everything was working fine until about 2 months ago. I had a local friend on a different provider run a tracers on the same IP address. He averaged a 28MS ping on a slower provider with 8 hops. Completely avoiding the Telia server.

Can anyone else do a tracert to see they are hitting Telia? If this is a routing issue, is it up to Steam to fix since it is directing traffic?

I have ATT Fiber as well. I am located in Kentucky. I also began experiencing higher pings around the same time as you. Here is my tracert to (i think) an ip address the atlanta relay. Between hop 9 and 10 the connection is leaving the ATT network (ending 192.205.33.42) and connecting to Telia. I've reached out to both ATT and Valve, but no resolution thus far.

Thanks for that info. There are a few posts in the ATT fiber forum. I’ve also created a new post. Not sure how we can push ATT/Telia/Valve to fix this.
