I use it, too. Properly configured, it is much better than Valve's artifical 3D sound. I am a musician and thus have a fine hearing. Stereo is completely outdated and has been for ages now. Pinpointing sound sources in surround sound is so much more precise, naturally.

Use normal decent headphones + a mic for lot better value and quality and avoid anything that is labeled "GAMING HEADSET" or is from Razer, Logitech, HyperX etc.... those are all scams and are priced more than they should only because of brand, design, and the fact that they are for "gaming"
If you're talking about sound quality itself then yes. But surround sound quality by far not. Thats the whole point of HRTF is the transfer function for the ears. Even if 5.1 or 7.1 was that great. Every proffesional would be using it. Yet the very opposite is happening. Heck you cant even use surround headsets on tournaments.. they only use earbuds and ear protectors due all the loud sounds. And 5.1 and 7.1 insanly increases sounds you dont even wanna hear even with true 5.1 or virtualized 7.1. The difference is like day and night on surround headsets or stereo with on both settings..
Or you could try yourself in the audio test chamber map..

Personally, I am super content with my Logitech G633. It has decent sound quality for its price and you can choose between dolby headphone and dts headphone x. Of course it doesn't compare to twice or three times as expensive stereo headphones some of my friends have.
The Pros use the HyperX Cloud - Headsets because they have contracts to use sponsored hardware. That's it.
By the way, at least on tournaments they use in-ear-headphones under the headset they wear. It is purely advertising what is happening there.
