CS :GO noob help - How do I even start the game?
I know this probably sounds like a stupid question, but I can't even figure out how to start the game. I installed CS:GO on Linux. i had to deal with some technical issues before I could get the game to run. I finally got it running, and I was able to complete the in-game tutorial/training. But now I can't figure out how to start a game. I did figure out how to enable myself to be found by other players, but I got kicked from my first lobby invite because it said I have to get Rank 2 first. That's fine but how do I get rank 2 if I can't even start the game? I can't even figure out how to train offline with bots before jumping into an online match. There's nothing on the menu that says "Play" or "Start" or "Go" or anything of the sort. Am I missing something that should be obvious, or is there something wrong with the client that isn't allowing me to start?

I even asked my son who often plays CS:GO on Windows how to start a game, and even he was stumped why I couldn't start a game. So hopefully this isn't a case of me just being unable to figure this out.

There should be a play button (a triangle in a circle) near the top left, underneath the csgo logo

You will have to play modes other than competitive in order to reach level 2. When you click the play button in the main menu, you get five or so tabs at the top of the screen that allow you to change the game mode. All game modes except "Competitive" and "Wingman" are available from level 1.

If you have any other questions, perhaps specifically around running CS:GO on Linux, feel free to shoot me a friend request.

I finally figured out what was going on. I was aware of the Play icon in the upper left which opens the options for beginning a game. But what I couldn't find was how to start a game once I chose my options. As it turns out, the "Go" button in the lower right corner was covered up by my taskbar in Plasma 5. Fortunately if I moved my mouse cursor to just above the taskbar, it would illuminate the "Go" button just enough for me to click on it even though the button was completely hidden by the taskbar.

I don't know if this is an issue with Plasma 5 or CS:GO, but I suspect CS:GO because I haven't seen this behavior with other apps where the maximized window fails to snap to the border of the taskbar.

I've got a similar problem: CS:GO started in windowed mode and I couldn't find the "Go" button in the lower section since it got covered.

What I did: Go to settings > video, pick an compatible resolution and change from windowed to fullscreen. Then try clicking the "Apply" button in the lower section, it is next to the rightmost section (the one with your profile picture). With some luck, you'll be able to apply the settings and now the "Go" button is visible
