I agree. Adults are free to spend there money how they like. The issue is we and Valve know kids play this and other games that use loot box's. Anybody who thinks the current age verification system works is straight up wrong and the age certification on games is voluntary. I see this as more of a problem for the parents. Its up to them to make sure they are happy with what there kids do. But can you imagine the outcry and backlash if a 12 year old kid was found in a betting shop placing a bet. It would be stopped straight away without question. However, in games its going unnoticed.
As an interesting side note. I don’t know if you are aware but Activision have patented a matchmaking system that matches players without good inventories with players who are better than them and have good loot in-order to use peer pressure. The system matches players with players who are statistically better than them but because people think match making is placing them in games with people who are at the same level as them they think it’s the loot that makes the difference and are then more likely to spend money on loot boxes for that chance to get an item that will make them win more. Activision say they don’t actually use the system and im not suggesting that Valve does anything like that but that’s the sort of thought processes that go on in some big developers and publishers.
Cool its good that you are responsible but its better to be informed as well. Just be aware its not just a simple matter of products being offered that are fun. Methods and systems are used to influence the way we behave and how much we spend and most people are not aware of that and can get swept up in “one more $ and I will get the item I want”.
