The science of Float
Valve is making all skins look different so that they will be unique and rare.

There are more than 500,000 players.

In programming, you can't assign a number greater than 32767. To do so, you need to use a double digit, or a float memory value so that the computer is able to read it. A float value allows up to 15 digits.

All skins are given a float value. Between 0 to 1 and up to 15 decimal places. For example an average looking skin can contain the float value of 0.5123456789012345.

With multiple different floats, Valve programmed a system to make look them different. Some would look more dirty, some would look brighter.

There are 5 categories for floats.

Factory new = float 0.00000 to 0.06999999
Minimum wear = 0.0700000 to 0.149999
Field Tested = 0.1500000 to 0.37999999
Well Worn = 0.38000000 to 0.449999999.
Battle scarred = 0.4500000 to 0.9999999.

If you have a factory new 0.69 float skin, and someone else has a 0.001 factory new skin, that person's skin would look better than yours.

In short, the higher the float, the higher the used marks on the skin

Sorry, but you're both wrong.

Float range isn't a set amount across the board for all skins.

Refer to CSGO Stash for the float ranges for each particular skin.

They're not all the same (because some are capped on either or both ends at different numbers).

While certain skins have float cap (e.g. AWP Asiimov has 0.18-1.00 float range), float categorization holds for all skins. That is why you can't find FN or MW AWP Asimmov, and why some MW skins are more rare (and expensive) compared to its FN counterpart.
