Why are smurfs called "smurfs"

I understand hackers are called hackers because, well, they hack the game, and boosters are boosting people to the top and in higher ranks, but smurfs? How are little blue creatures from a french comic representing playing in lower ranks to beat everyone?

My only theory is that the smurfs (little innofensive happy creatures) keep beating Gargamel (big angery wizard), even tho they are pretty weak, like csgo's smurf. They look normal and weak but they beat everyone.

Pro player and his friend in starcraft were so good and known that enemies insta surrendered every match so they couldn't play...

They made alt accounts called Papa smurf and Smurfette and after match they were saying "Thanks for smurfing" or smth like that

It was WarCraft then Starcraft where smruffing started in 1996
