Because you don't have a 4:3 screen, duh. Either deal with the bars or stretch it to fill your screen

Check your monitor settings to see what scaling model you're running.

This post is 6 years old, try to make your own post, you may get more help from there.
But if you havnt installed 'NVIDIA Control Panel' you could try that. It its possiable to change scaling mode in there. I dont know if it works, with an AMD card, but its worth a shot.

Hi I know it's old post but I actually had the same problem just with other res and found the solution so leaving it here in case some fellow top and bottom black bars enjoyers would search for a solution
Use this settings in nivida custom res panel
1600x900 hz according to ur monitor
then change the timing from automatic to manual and put this
active pixels 1600 1125
16 1
144 3
2110 1199
+ +
hz according to ur monitor
It actually works with any 16/9 res thats lower than original than ur monitor
in active pixels put desired width*1 then desired height*1.25
16 1
144 3
desired width*1.31875 desired height*1.3325
++
hz according to ur monitor
Also important thing you have to use the res on your monitor for the time of playing and in game settings change to fullscreen windowed

Yeah, or just play on your monitors native resolution, and stop doing this custom resolution nonsense, which is doesnt make you play better at all and is just placebo effect.:steamhappy:

Nope native res is uncomfortable for me I fell overwhelmed by it especially on bigger monitors
