it's far better than HDMI or DVI and the standard for modern gaming.
using any kind of adapter will probably add a decent ammount of input lag, which is seriously annoying.

This is the standard today, HDMI is for TV's and consoles and not much more. Either use DVI or Displayport.
Im pretty sure there is no GPU that has ONLY HDMI so you either have the option to DVI or DP. HDMI should be avoided unless you are connecting the PC to a television.
Displayport > DVI > HDMI, basically. but if you haven't got a choice then you use an adapter for HDMI.
