Competetive 30 rounds?
I just got this game. I have played CS since forever.

I don't get it though. Why 30? Thats kinda a lot isn't it?

I would be okay with 15 and happy with 9

I'm just curious as to why. I got the game to play with someone I know but I will probably never play competetive with him.

Best of 30 so it could be 16-30 rounds unless a team surrenders. It's a competitive, they are meant to last longer.

I understand that.

but it seems excessive. That's my point.

Do you really need to play that much to determine who is better?

I feel like after 4 rounds you pretty much figured out who your teamates are.

Things change, especially at half-time. Usually the economy of the games can have momentum swings and a team always has to make decisions per round to determine what will and what won't work.

I just can't wrap my head around a 30 round possibility with random strangers over essentially nothing except a slight rank up

These aren't people you know, there is no real recognition, its just matchmaking with randoms who are expected to play seriously. I would be more happy if this kind of thing existed for pre-made groups of 5.

To allow for long term strategies, i.e saving 2 rounds and buying on the third. This gives both teams a more dynamic and flexible approach to competitive.

Trust me, I have played over 2500 competitive matches, 30 round games take a long time but usually they take less than that. But mostly you get used to binge-playing competitive and you don't see it as the serious side of this game but just another game mode instead.

That makes a lot of sense. Can this be acheived with 15 rounds? I'm not trying to push change or anything. I really am just trying to figure out why. I hate the idea that I may have to dedicate (realistically) an hour of my time to a game if the match is close. I'm more happy with dedicating 40 minutes tops.

I already know I'll stick to casual and I'm fine with that - I did clan matches in CS 1.6 or whatever and they were great and the rest of my CS time was always random servers.

I just want to know why and you provided one possible answer that supports the reasoning.

Well casual has 15 rounds and a different economic system, as well as some settings like sv_deadtalk and specall etc. but competitive is so much different and a lot of people prefer it and other competitive like ESEA/Faceit. I suppose not everyone likes committing to those longer competitives but people enjoy it.

Short way of saying it is economy. the economy game cant be played in a shorter time.
Solidusbucket 2017 年 5 月 6 日 下午 11:18
I have noticed that the gun balance in this game differs widely compared to the other iterations.
riffraff 2017 年 5 月 6 日 下午 11:20
that has to do with the economy. first 3 rounds are ecos for the most part. you win pistol you can buy smg. you win with smg you can buy rifles. after that its gun round. then its really a toss up. after that thats when things get interesting. that is why you cant just end it after the 4th round.

I dont understand how you cannot understand why it has to be long when you say youve played the game since forever.
30 rounds actually isnt enough. Real competitiv matches are usually best of 3 meaning you play at least 2 matches to earn 1 win.

From a scientific point of view:

We want to determine which team is better. We measure this by letting them fight each other, first we assume both are equal 50/50, now we could say lets play one round, the winner is the better one, simple.

Now we want to check if the result we got is correct. How? Let them fight a second time just 1 round. If the same player win we can say that our first measurement was probably correct.
If the other player wins, well we are back to 50/50. That tells us that there must be something wrong with either the first measurement or the second one.
This could be things we as humans would call "random". Luckily staying in the right position for example, thats not skill thats just random.

Thats why we need much more measurements than 1,2,3,5 or even 10.
More rounds = more measurements = more accurate results

What long matches also do is adding time tension, making endurance an important factor.
One team might be able to play godlike for 10 minutes and after that their skill/concentration drops, while it other team stays consistant beating the other team in the end.

Well, I have played actual tournaments in the very old days of CS. Not pro tournaments but the casual stuff. However, the casual stuff was organized teams, not randoms. From what I remember it was best of 7 for each side.

I just don't find it right to try to make the competetive matchmaking require so much dedication to time. I want to play seriously with people but I am not going to promise them an hour of my time. I'm starting to understand why but it doesn't change my mind that it sucks.

I can understand that, but thats how it works. For some people the game is a little bit more than just a game, its a sport. We watch pros competing on the highest level and we want to play the same, just on a lower level but with the same rules.

Dont know if you watch any sports, but what would a football game be if its only 15 minutes?
What would an F1 race be with only 10 laps? ;)

Ahh, I understand that then if its the culture of the game...
