I'd be interested to see how much people are actually profiting in this game, but I do know that i do ok. My advice is to not worry about it to much just yet, and play the game, sell your skins, keep the cases, and watch the market. learning the average prices of items over time gives you a good idea as to what is high or low for certain skins. when you see a skin that's at a low, buy in. hold for the price to rise, and then sell. I've made decent returns with just this.

Another method is to keep track of your in game offers. whether you value stickers or not, someone out there does. In my currency most stickers are 1.30. I can usually sell for about 1.35 on the market after the steam fees, and every 9$ usd you spend in game earns you an extra trading card, which can be sold for another nickel or so.

As above, new cases are always in high demand, before they eventually drop to about 3-4 cents, so sell them asap. once they bottom out(3 cents us) you may want to just keep them. you have 1000 inventory spots for a reason, no need to clear out if it's at a bad price. but if you wait long enough you might get 10 cents each while riding the hype train. I actually buy a few cases from each collection when they bottom out, so that if i do ever open one it's cheap, and if they do ever go up i can sell for a bit more.

Just like any good advisor would tell you, diversify. I have skins that i buy because i want to have them, and don't expect to sell, so I don't worry about profit to much with these, and then i have stuff that is just there to hold out for the long term profits. Generally i try to keep about 30% of my inventory value as long term investments. Examples would be buying skins from cobblestone/chop shop collections during the previous operation when they were cheap, and selling off when they are more expensive. It has taken a year, but I made roughly 85% on these. Patience is key.

Your ability to profit, and how to go about it is highly dependent on your inventory value.between 20-50 dollars in value, your best bets are things that might make you only 3 cents each, but you can do a ton of. Contrast that with a 50 $ skin that might take 6 months to make 1$ off of. 1$/6months on a 50$ inventory is only 4%. If you can flip for 3 cents 100 times in that same time, you will have made 3$ or 12%.

At a certain point though, you need to look at higher value items.holding a 1000 cases for a 6 months to make 1 cents means only 10 bucks profit. When you are sitting at 100$ in value in your inventory that's 10%, not a bad year. but if your inventory is worth 1000$ it's only 1%. Going back to the 50$ skin, you could buy 20 of them, and if you make a buck each in 6 months, that's double the profit in the same period. What i'm trying to say is keep track of your rate of return, and try to maximize it as much as possible.
