1: marry someone that owns an house
2: become thane and buy the house in the county (5 houses awailable in vanilla, +3 with hearthfire)
3: download an house mod.
Remeber that almost all the chests respawn their content every week, so any item you store in general chests across skyrim are going to disappear. The only chests that are safe and don't make your item disappear are the ones in owned houses, plus some exception like the one in the thief guild.
I don't know if the chest in the sleep giant inn secret room is safe or not, you'd better check it somewhere or you are going to loose all your items.
BTW, if you are following the mainquest line, you should be able to buy breezehome in whiterun for a cheap price, and very early in the game (just after killing the first dragon)
Also, in another post you criticized hearthfire to be only a stupid SIM dlc, and you stated you are only into quests and levelling, but why then are you making a lot of posts that ask about houses and item storage? If you really only care about adventuring, and go on criticizing hearthfire, why you just don't simply seel everything you don't need and go on adventuring instead of asking about houses?
You gather the materials it says, then it builds it. It is all pre-planned. Just like crafting in general in Skyrim. The location and layout is aready set.
Just buy Breezehome in Whiterun. It is the cheapest. Then upgrade the bedroom. That is all you realy need anyways.
I have over 350 hours single character, i own every house and have built my new windstad manor with the hearhfire dlc. i had married earlier in the game and she has a house already in whiterun btw. its small and i dont recommend living there. she does have a "store" but not at an actual location, you will receive money from her when you see her. just talk to her and ask if the store has made any money. its kind of nice when youve been gone all week to get a 1000 gold for coming home. i think its 200 gold a day your going to get from being married. the second thing is i adopted two kids which you must have a bed and storage chest for each child in a house you own before you can adopt them. so if you are going to purchase the house in whiterun, dont purchase the alchemy upgrade becuase this is where your children's room will go. i just save you money there.
in all fairness if you dont want wife and kids nor spend the money on a house i would seriously look into a mod called mist top retreat. it is very solid and has everything you need in a house including smelter, anvil, workbench, alchomy table etc. it has great storage all throughout the house. i am a traveler like you, i love to spend a day just roaming around and hunting and then doing a quest line on another day. this house mod in my opinoin is a must. http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/12546/
one thing that you cant do with this mod is move in your wife or kids, it is a bachelor pad pimp style...
