Riding dragons sucks.
Yeah. It sucks. You can't even steer. The dragon just circles around and you "may choose your destination." You can't fight. You can only order your dragon to do so. ♥♥♥♥ YOU BETHESDA, I loved the rest of Dragonborn DLC but WELL ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DONE on the dragon riding. For those of you who haven't played Dragonborn and wonders if it's worth buying, the answer is yes. But don't get your hopes up regarding the dragon riding like I did.

You just perfectly explained my point as well as contradicted yourself. Dragon riding is part of the game meaning modders now can do as they please with it. you are absolutely right in the sense that the car is a reskined horse but that has nothing to do with my point because dragon riding is now apart of skyrim.

The mods out there that do look like they change gameplay only use EXISTING gameplay on new graphical objects.

Remember those broom riding and car driving mods? Those mods are just the horse with a different texture and model.

Basically the modders can't do what is not already in the game.

lol. Yeah it's too bad the consoles didn't get dragonborn weeks in advance before the pc. And it's a shame they haven't had reviews up on the DLC for nearly the last month. It would have been great if you could have only read those reviews to see that you can't steer the dragon. Oh wait. Yeah.

I'm not convinced by this. I've seen a mod that could transform the player character into a dragon, and a magic ring of flight, a slow-time spell and a send-em-flying-for-yards-with-every-punch spell. I've seen arrows that drag the enemy to your position with a loud "Get over here!"

Now, granted, doing flight is hard, and tends to involve collision not working properly, (at least in Skyrim. Oblivion and Morrowind didn't have this problem,) but it's going too far to say that modders can't add anything that isn't in the game already.

If someone is able to pull it off and put in to in to the game, then I would love to see it and would be the first in line to download such a mod. I know there are people that are able to make such a mod, but it will take a lot of work and skill with only a few Skyrim modders able to pull off such a feat. So the real question is not whether or not it can be done, but rather can anyone be bothered to put in the time and effort to make such a mod?

When I said "modders can't do what is not already in the game", I meant your general modder, as most game modders just add graphical changes to a game.
Mods that add entirely new game mechanics are very rare and are mostly seen in huge projects.

I know that such a mod is possible; I just think it is very unlikely and I don't want to be waiting for a mod that may never happen.

And riding dragons, crude mechanics admittedly at current, isn't now a part of the game?

I'd bet on the modding community coming up with better appearing flight mechanics long before Bethesda/Steam fixing the crudity it is now.

Well atleast you can fly the dragon, I get stuck and can't even fly it and cannot even progress the DLC now because when I go to mount the dragon... the dragon flys off without me and my character is left floating in the air. tried vanilla skyrim, repaired cache and nothing still broken. Last resort would be to re-download skyrim completely :/

I know, you're right, it's just that I feel like they're leaving everything for the modding community. They just create the basic engines.

And by the way, dragons are apart of Skyrim and many people have used the meshes, animations and textures for their mods and making Spells, Powers and Shouts where you become a dragon or a frost troll or just anything. Some have succeeded better than others but now that dragonborn is out, with new animations, meshes, textures etc. there will be even more resources out there for the modding community to use.

Basically, Skyrim only contains the basic resources fo modding. The rest is up to the author. He/she may pick up meshes and textures from another game or create new ones.

I can hardly imagine Bethesda making the dragon riding different and then publicly release it as a patch, an update or another DLC (money is their drug). This is not a bug, it is a part of the actual gameplay and we just have to face the fact that t is up to us to change it if that is what we want.
Balraw Feb 7, 2013 @ 7:35am
Given that there is already a mod out that lets you fly dragons without the need for Dragonborn (its on the workshop look it up you lazy gits ;p ) though admittedly it is only for transport not really combat and somewhat buggy atm, it still does exist. So things can only get better with the addition of the Dragonborn dlc framework and I will remain interested where the mod community goes with this in the coming days/weeks/months.
