Inconveniently dead NPC's.
So I was in Riverwood just doing business, selling stuff to the NPC's and whatnot, and a dragon decided to ruin everyone's day. I killed it, no problem, but poor Alvor the Blacksmith did not survive the attack. Do dead vendors come back after a while, or am I out one Alvor for this game?

Also, since Alvor is dead and therefore can't object to theft, can I take his 5 iron and 5 steel ingots just laying under his workbench?

You are playing the PC ver , if he does not come back , just use the console and revive him.

No problems.

What's the resurrect command?
Jerakeen Nov 13, 2013 @ 1:07pm
I don't know what the command is, but the mod I use to prevent this is "Run For Your Lives" (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=114272858)

Congratulations; you've won the "Most Caring Dragonborn 2013"-award.

But no, even if the one who witnesses crime is not the owner of the item(s) in question, you'll be reported and arrested if caught.

And no, neither does Alvor come back after a while. In fact, no one comes back after a while (at least not usually), and if they do, it's usually Skjor and it's usually a bug.

I was in your shoes once. I helped myself to Alvor's Iron and Steel as I figured he wouldn't need them any more. A little while later I'm exiting a dungeon and I am set upon by three thugs. They are attacking me in revenge for stealing the above mentione ditems. And whoo signed the noote setting the thugs upon me? Alvor, from beyond the grave or Sovengard which ever.

Edit: Bring up the consule commands and type resurrect, click on the body and they are alive again. It only works once, maaybe twice though.

Alvor died for me too when a dragon attacked Riverwood. What an idiot! I read somewhere else that he tends to die when defending against dragons. lol. Anyway I am still able to take the steel and iron ingot for free whenever it spawns but that's because I did a mini-quest for him before he died (making an iron dagger or something and bringing it to him). Maybe he regarded me as a friend after that, I dunno, but I've never had any problem taking that ingot and people not regarding it as theft.

PS - if you really want to steel his ingot just crouch and make sure you're not seen. lol. I sometimes steal stuff from Radient Raiments in Solitude, not necessarily because I need it, but I can't stand the sisters who run the place. lol

use the console command "setessential 1" on your favourite NPC's so they can't die in random vampire, cultist, or dragon attacks.

I've found that these better than the mods that try to get NPC AI to run to safe zones. They essentially automatically set essential and protected flags for you:

Unfortunately, I don't think they will resurrect dead NPCs for you. For that, you will have to rely on the console, and work around any other side effect it has caused.

Oh c'mon... Let the guy that got killed by a random event stay dead
That's one of the reasons why Skyrim a great game... Like in real life, ♥♥♥♥ happens. Now you lost a trusted vendor, deal with it, the game world is kinda big, you can do it without him.

Thank you so much for this. I had like 5 important npc's die on me in a random vampire attack. Normally I don't like to "cheat" and bring dead players back but several of them give quests and I didn't want to loose out on those.

I don't disagree with you but I think there should have been "replacement" NPCs. Example: Alvor, the smith in Riverwood, dies, let his daughter Dorthe take over. I know if Belathor, in Whiterun, dies, Ysolda takes over the store and I think if Lucan, at the Riverwood Trader, dies his sister Camilla takes over. So if Grelka in Riften buys it some other NPC either one already in Riften or a completly new one takes over her stand. I would love to see a mod for that.

You can open the console(~) and click the dead NPC. then, type resurrect.
