Why did Bethesda make a map with no roads?
I finally found a workshop mod that adds roads to the map and I can't believe how much better it is. I can actually use it as a useful navigational tool instead of relying on luck and hoping I don't end up in a dead end staring up a mountain cliff.

It makes me wonder why Bethesda went without them in the first place. Did they think it adds to the game play or did they have to cut corners with their budget/release date?

I'm thinking the latter but this is Bethesda after all so you never know.

Are you using this Mod?

because I recommend this one.

There is also the posssibility that they tought having a map with roads is something the players don't want.
cause no google earth in skyrim
Which means they weren't really thinking.

true...
I'm actually happy that the stupid Folks of Tamriel where able to design an atleast accurate map.... wich as we see only includes big cities and no villages, wich is extremely dumb
Having roads implies that everything is connected by roads and I thought some people enjoyed the "openness" of this game, as well as not knowing for sure where things were, but could be discovered.

Either way, it's helpful and may also affect game play for some. Great thing is that it's a mod so add it or not if you want to.
It's a nice touch to the map, though I personally don't think it's really all that necessary to enjoy it as a useful component to the game. It's not that I don't like it; in fact I think it's a good idea. The only reason why I might not really use it is because I've been playing Skyrim ever since it's been released to the public back when it first came out in 2011, so I'm pretty familar with the territories in Skyrim. That, and I am also using the Border Sense mod so I can know where borders are; to be fair, I don't really need this mod either for the same reason, but I just liked the idea of being a bit aware of knowing where all the borders that separate the Holds are since the mod provides messages concerning your location upon entering or exiting a particular hold.

No road maps in Morrowind, but then again Morrowind had a pretty crappy map. Oblivion had the best maps in my opinion.

Soon to find out for myself. Got both working(OB and Morrow) Now if i can get myself to quit playing around with my Skyrim I might get some hours on them.

To be fair, Morrowind came with a very nice paper map (labeled in Daedric, nonetheless). The in game map was more of a quickie overview. You can grab this map online, here's one scan that's not quite so large:

Personally I find myself simply following the quest marker arrows - I might use the map to figure out which one's closest, but that's about it. If that arrow leads me anywhere near a road, I might run along it for a while... but as soon as it turns off or whatever, I'll quite happily go up/down cliffs.

So easy to forget about Clairvoyance.

That spell is underpowered. I mean, how often does anyone really use Clairvoyance? Bethesda could have just left it out and it wouldn't have made much of a difference since it's unnecessary.

I would have killed for a Clairvoyance spell in Morrowind :-)
I recommend using Warburgs paper map. I think it looks a lot better than vanilla Skyrims aerial view map. The only drawback is having to keep it as the very last thing in your load order.

You mean there were no maps before Google Earth? How did we all manage?!
