You play as every class you want in Skyrim, if you don't want to use spells don't use them. Just use Bows

You level up your skills as you use them. For example, lockpicking requires that you pick locks. For spellcraft, you use up your spells and stuff to gain levels (although to level them up, you must be in combat!). If you want to be an archer, simply grab a bow, some arrows, and kill something. If you don't want to be a mage/melee/etc. simple don't use materials that they use (although as an archer myself, I find light armor, enchanting, conjuration and alchemy are very helpful!).

Welcome to the Skyrim community, new comer! The game doesnt have actual classes. Its more of a vocation based off of your perks and preffered combat style and which birthsign stone you choose to have activated. The archetypes (mostly reffered as classes) tend to be Mage, Thief (or rogue), and Warrior. These are the umbrella terms which consitute the options you have in game. Archery is under the warrior perk tree, but for a may archer (rogue hybrid maybe?) many of your skills should also go into the Thief perk archetype. There are hundreds of combinations and Hybrids which lie in between the three umbrella "classes" and they have no proper guidlines to which "class" you become. So, in conclusion, your class is lenghtly and complicatedly developed throughout your adventures and questing within the game. I hope i answered your question and merry adventuring!

There are no classes, you pick your race, what you look like... and you're off!

Make sure you grab this mod, it's almost essential - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=419668499

delete your saves and start a new game.

Choices are: Mage, Warrior and Thief, then pick the Guardian Stone to match your choice

I just read what i type and it doesn't sound right, i've not played much Skyrim lately as i'm heavy into ESO: Tamriel Unlimited, and it's a new learning curve i'm trying to master. ESO is good stuff for ES fans = all the lore of all ES games in one big-ass MMO and it's my first MMO, but ESO can be played almost like a single-player ES game.

I always like to help new players. You see, Skyrim is a vast world full of small little choices yet so big. You don't have to choose between Warrior/Mage/Rogue/Archer/Assassin. Skyrim gives you the opportunity to be them all and yet not a single one of them. You are allowed to rush into a dragon head-on, but when your health gets low, you just grab your bow/magic and heal yourself while shooting some fireballs.

You have no formal classes. Instead, your class is what you play like because skills improve through use. So if you want to be a thief, then play as a thief by being sneaky, picking pockets, etc. If you don't want to use weapons, then don't use weapons. If you want to be a mage then use spells. When you level up you get "perks" to improve your skills in various ways. Only spend these perk points on skill that are significant to your class. You also get options to put points in health, magicka, or stamina, so choose according to your class.

It's very freeform. If you want to plan out your character in detail, you can. Or you can just go with the flow and see where events take you. You can pick one of the Guardian Stones (found near where you exist the first quest), and they'll give you an XP boost for certain skills. But there are other stones out there with interesting abilities.

So....much...Options... cant....... make... a... decision. *uff*

Yea, i feeling with you. I remembered the days where i started to play. I created a new Charakter every Day to check out how different classes are going or simply because i couldnt make a decision..

Favourite Classes:

Battlemage, Paladin, Warlock/Summoner (you will need mods for a good Summoner.. or at least to have more fun) and a puristic Barbarian/Berserk.

As others have said, you don't have a class. You only have skills that get better the more you use them, so feel free to use whatever you want, and that will determine what "class" you are. There are birthsign stones you can activate (the first 3 you run past after the intro), that make certain skills level up faster, so activate the one that suits your playstyle and you will progress faster in your chosen skillset. Other skills will level up too when you use them and it's generally a good idea to branch out a bit, no matter what you play.

I play a mage, but i find sneaking and pickpocketing very useful, so i leveled up those too in addition to spell schools i use. Alteration and restoration schools tend to be useful for everyone, and enchanting and smithing are a must no matter what you play.

A good tip for leveling up something that is hard to level normally is to go to a skill trainer, level with them (once), quicksave, then pickpocket your money back, rinse and repeat. :) I leveled my pickpocket to 100 and other hard to level skills this way, and i gained a lot of levels in the process.

So, just play with what you want, and don't worry about it, your "class" will shape according to how you play.
Elf isn't good for archer but it still works anyways everyone gets those two spells
