Uninstalling AFT
I un-installed, because Lydia's schizoid behavior frustrated me too much, and now I cannot start Skyrim any more, unless I have basically every mod inactive (the vanilla game will still run, but it won't run my old saves).

How the heck do I uninstall this thing? I thought just doing it from the Nexus mod manager was enough?

Also, this is what the site says: What does it mean? In particular, what are "dirty edits"?

"AFT has 6 dirty edits which have been left in the mod intentionally. Those who use boss will get messages about this."

Uninstalling from the mod manager is virtually never enough, except for pure texture mods.

I hope you followed the uninstall instructions b4 disabling the mod. If you dont have a save where AFT is still installed you might be in trouble. Otherwise, reinstall AFT, reload the save ,dismiss all followers, use AFT tools to reset AFT, save and *now* disable AFT. Run a script cleaner afterwards.

'Dirty edits' aka 'identical to master' are just that: records that are identical to the master file. let's say, skyrim.esm sets the lightning in a room to green, another mod also has that record, that sets the lightning to green (=identical). The problem is: if another mod between skytim.esm and the 'dirty' mod sets the lightning to red, that change gets overwritten, cause the mod loaded last alswys wins. With lightning, it's trivial, with other records it can and will cause crashes.

I did dismiss all followers, but I didn't reset AFT. I didn't even know there were uninstall instructions.

I've reinstalled and cannot open any old saves with it. I guess I will just get rid of it and reinstall stuff from the ground-up.

Maybe you can try to clean your saves with the script cleaner tool.

Have you tried going to an interior location make a hard save. Load it and then try and load one of your saves?

You also may make your game vanilla again, without a complete reinstall:

You will, hopefully, be using a mod load order optimization program: "LOOT" and a mod organizer like "MO" or "NMM".

Thanks; and no, I haven't been using LOOT. But I will install that now.

You pretty much cannot safely remove AFT mid-game. You shouldn't really remove any mod (other than things like textures) mid-game and continue without reloading to a save before you ever installed it, but AFT is a nightmare to remove, even with the instructions followed perfectly it's likely to mess up your saves because of all the scripting and whatnot.

If nothing works in resurrecting and continuing an old game, then I can simply start a new game, no? Or will the new game be messed up as well?

Yehsoo, my old saves work again - with EFF fully functioning.

Thanks, lovelies! ;)

New game should be fine, yep :)

I've had some odd experiences with AFT with the various installing/uninstalling I've done over the years. Sometimes, I'll have one follower in my party but when trying to change their outfit, it's actually showing a different follower's inventory (I'm assuming due to mods moving in the order between installs or something like that). I prefer the features of AFT over UFO but dunno if one is more friendly than the other?

Although my old saves work, there are a lot of glitches with it. For instance, my Breeze home is completely screwed up, as I had to uninstall a Breeze home add-on mod as well. So better restart - I want to experience the whole game with all my mods installed anyways.

skipped most of the text lol

if you wish to remove AFT you need to reset AFT while skyrim is active, its on the shout powers as it integates all DLC as well once you reset AFT then save on all your chars then you can remove it with NMM normally THEN its a good idea to run a save cleaner on your save to remove old junk

Yeah, it's really best (and less frustrating in the long run) to start a new game if you're uninstalling mods, it's officially a bad idea according to Bethesda, the game can't cope with it. Sometimes it doesn't cause obvious problems, but usually you end up with frequent crashes, strange NPC behavior, broken quests, and so on.

Plus the first twenty or so levels are often the most fun :)
