Regarding Use of Steam Workshop - NOT Recommended
Lately there have been a number of posts by people stating that they are using Steam Workshop for their mods - it is STRONGLY recommended that you DO NOT use it, as it has been broken since April of 2015 and has not been fixed (and will not be). People should use Nexus for their mods (and also use a mod manager such as Vortex or Mod Organizer 2).
See the following for issues with the Workshop:

(from PINNED TOPIC Helpful Links and References, Section 1, General Information)

And there is this:

9. Workshop vs. Nexus
You may notice that many of us currently recommend using Nexus instead of Workshop. This does not mean that peoples are Nexus advocates, or have bias toward Skyrim Workshop. It is simply that Workshop got messed up during the spring 2015. It looses data and has problems with subscriptions. So far neither Valve or Bethesda has taken steps to fix it.

I recommend avoiding scripted mods from Workshop, for now. Other mods are "safe", in a way that loosing the data may be annoying, but it does not bug out your game. More information about the problem can be found from the link below.

If you DO use the Workshop, see this guide for proper Workshop use to avoid issues with it:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=941851599
(from PINNED TOPIC Helpful Links and References, Section 4, Modding the Game)

And for those starting a new playthrough and who wish to remove Workshop mods:
Go to your \steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\data folder and delete the esp and bsa for the mods you were subscribed to. Unfortunately unsubbing does not remove the mod.

Note that the vast majority of mods should not be removed mid-playthrough. See the following for information regarding the reason for this (doing so will in the vast majority of cases break your save):
You CANNOT Remove Mods Mid-Playthrough - https://steamcommunity.com/app/72850/discussions/0/1495615865205745360/
(from PINNED TOPIC Helpful Links and References, Section 5, General Troubleshooting)

Good luck!

At least it did introduce some people to the whole modding scene.

That it did! And if used properly (as outlined in that "Reliable" Workshop guide), it can still be of use - but people need to be aware of the issues with it - too many new players are not.

Just a little bump to the top to make sure new players see this. And, as always, anyone new should refer to the Pinned topics - especially:

Player and Modding Resources by Ilja http://steamcommunity.com/app/72850/discussions/0/594821545176386165/
VERY IMPORTANT if you wish to successfully mod your game

And refer to this resource for links to guides, tutorials, vids, and other important information:

Still a number of posts about using Steam Workshop. It cannot be emphasized enough that except for the most basic mods, it should not be used, and, if it is, then this guide needs to be followed:

Well it was good while it lasted. But how lazy and greedy is Steam going to be let this platform legit DIE!?!

I did nearly a whole playthrough with tons of mods from the workshop and never had a single problem.

I actually was reading an article that steam is going to be updating the workshop in the near future, apparently they want to include a LOOT like function for sorting mods as well as features from managers like NMM.
