When word wall dragons are killed they respawn after a time, minus anymore words. I believe the respawn type depends on your level, once you hit level 50, they'll be Ancient dragons.
unless you have the mod which starts them from moment 1 of the game.
I have not started a main quest yet. I simply selected that scripted dragons should be available right from the start. You will still need to finish that portion of main quest for burial site spawns, but you can travel around Skyrim for other dragons and wordwalls to speed your ability to finish that quest.

My advice is to just head for the Western Watchtower when Jarl Balgruuf tells you to and fight the dragon there. That's what triggers dragons as random enemy encounters, so you don't have to proceed with the main quest right away after this point if you want more dragon souls. As for dragons at buriel sites, they begin to appear at certain intervals of the main quest.

Unfortunately there was another dragon there too, ready for a full on fight.
Most of that is correct, though there a couple points to take note of. First, dragons can be found at word walls after the Western Watchtower; these aren't named dragons, they're random. Next, the dragons Alduin resurrects do spawn during several intervals of the main quest, but some of the sites won't have dragons. This is because Alduin has already been there and the ones who were buried there might be at another location nearby. Some buriel mounds won't be raised right away since some only get unearthed after a particular point in the main quest while others are revived at another stage of the quest. Hope this information helps.
