Yes it can, but not in all cases. I'm pretty sure the Amren Family Sword is one of them.
Did dismiss her in Falkreath and picked up Rayya. Did not find her until I did get the quest, followed the map marker and there she was dead and cold :(

Approach him and, if it gives you the option, ask him what he and his wife were arguing about. He should mention his father's sword, and you can ask him if he needs help finding it. It's usually one of the common bandit hideouts.
I'm hoping, once you return the sword to him, it will change to allow you to pickup whatever you need to pickup. Also, returning his sword gives you a boost in both one-handed and shield.
