The Best Way To Level Up Smithing (Skyrim)
Look, I've tried everything, making iron daggers, making dwarven/orcish bows, even just making a bunch of jewelry, but nothing has been very effective. I am currently at level 64 smithing, but it was not easy. All I really want to know is what is the best and cheapest way to level up your smithing skill in Skyrim?

jewelry is the best way. XP is based on the value of the item made. buy iron ore, transmute it to gold if you have to.

And this is a discussion best suited for the Skyrim forum, not the general Steam Discussion forum since it is a game question.

Asking in the Skyrim forums would bee a good start. I'll move it for you.

For me it was daggers through most of it as I leveled enchanting at the same time. That is how I made most my money too. Create dagger, enchant, sell. Value was over 250 gold per a dagger and it cost less then that for the materials to make it and enchant it.

Basically the more expensive the item your making or tempering, the more xp it will go up. So, best way is gold jewelry. For that you'll need lots of gold ingots, and you get lots of gold ingots by getting the transmute ore spellbook which is on the table in Halted Stream Camp near Whiterun. Get that, transmute iron ore to gold ore, smelt it into gold ingots and start crafting. There is also lots of gold to be found in Kollskeggr Mine in Markarth, but will need to clear it out the Forsworn first though which can be a bit tough.

Also, get the standing stone 'Warrior' near Riverwood as that increases smithing 20% faster. Also, get a good nights sleep to get the 'Well Rested' perk to increase it faster.

Heathfire homes are also a good way to level up smithing as it requires making lots of nails, hinges, locks etc.

Also, doing the quest for the argonian in Riften (cant remember the name but it involves taking a dwemer cube and placing it in a dwemer ruin) gives you the Ancient Knowledge perk which helps smithing.

Dwarven metal ingots is also good, as you find lots of dwarven scrap in Markarth, smelt it down, and make lots of dwarven gear.

No matter how you do it, you are in for many boring hours of gameplay. I level mine up by playing the game.:steamfacepalm:

You'll often see daggers recommended, but one of the later official patches altered the game such that more valuable items give more XP. These days they're one of the worst ways to train the skill.

Orcish and Nordic bows are probably your best bet currently, as they're fairly valuable items with simple resource requirements. Once you hit 80 skill, Ebony bows will take you the rest of the way to 100.

Dwarven bows works fairly well for me
Thanks guys, this really helped!

I made arrows, a lot of them since I tend to shoot them off and can't ever find enough arrows unless i pick up every arrow during a fight, buy a bunch from merchants and such. But, eventually you do end up with a bunch of arrows of all sorts, its just starting out where its tough having enough arrows to fight off a dragon.

I suppose I could try to make jewelry AND enchant them for more value as well.

Also, don't overlook incidentals - I'm forever killing bears, wolves, sabrecats, etc. while wandering, so I save the skins and make as much leather armor as I can. It's not too much XP compared to jewelry, but every litle bit helps, and if the game is throwing raw material at you anyway, well, waste not - want not...

Learn the alteration skill transmute, buy up lots of iron ore and change it to gold, make jewellery then find someone to sell it to Eorlund is good for that if you have the right speech perks, you can use the money to pay for his lessons.

Save the skill books until last if you can.

if you have enough speech level + thieves guild hood(+10% better prices) + some necklace of haggling(+15% better prices) you can buy expensive materials to craft bows and such and then sell the bows more or less the same you spent on the mats, but while leveling up the smithing(the higher tier the fast you lvl up)

I avoid console commands like this, mainly because I am wary of them mucking something up, which if you look through old posts, you'll see happens an awful lot.

The best way to level up smithing is to sharpen every weapon you get, and temper every piece of armour. It still takes a long time, but it doesn't wreck your game, and you still get there. If you have hearthfires dlc then making nails, iron fittings and hinges also improves your smithing skill, and you can use them to build up your hose (or furniture).
