Really I think they should have made the captain a freelancer as it would make the story and everything make a lot more sense - after, you don't buy your ship, crew, and equipment, the military supplies it. Also, as a military captain, you are to uphold laws, but this game has you break some like slave trading and the chance to join an assassins group. You also recruit crew from the civies instead of sending them to the military academy and boot camp.
Also, being a freelancer captain that has left the military, whether retiring or completing commission, and having trained under the captain who dies in the prologue, and maybe knowing an admiral or two in the campaign story line, would have made a MUCH better story. Like I said, it would be a WHOLE lot more fitting with the game play. The UI is much the same as Freelancer as well. Freelancer - the only game that Microsoft did right.
But, other than the story being completely different. Its a space RPG. So, yeah its similar, but not like Freelancer, other than basics.
The closest thing Iv found on the market, is Rebel Galaxy. But, even then, you are in capital ships in Rebel Galaxy. Where Freelancer was fighters. But, RG is working on another right now. And, it will be fighters.
When I mention basics, there is only so much you can do for a space game. Stations, interplanetary "warp". And, jump gates to the next system, are a staple of these games. So, in that regard, they are similar.
Is there a way you can make the movement like Freelancer? I tried it on my friends account, it seems you can't do that mouse for control style like Freelancer :(
Think of it this way. Freelancer is more like a plane. Where this game is more like a battleship.
With Freelancer, you were in a small, one seat, fighter. With front facing weapons. So, mouse flight was the way. But, in this game, you are in a huge ship, with a crew. So, you have to use broadside weapons. Which mean flying one direction, while firing in another.
If you really want that same feel like Freelancer, there are a couple games out, and more on the way. No Mans Sky, Galaxy on fire 2 is decent, Rebel Galaxy: Outlaw is coming soon on Epic Store, Everspace.
Freelancer is more of a RPG set in space. 2.5D space even.
BTS... well it has similar combat mechanics from Bridge Commander mixed with typical space MMO limitations (so your weapons have strict range limits, ammo is essentially unlimited/etc) plus rogue-lite elements from games like FTL. And while you do have the RPG elements like getting more ships and upgrading weapons... it's not quite to the same degree as in other games. Being a rogue-like game, there's a bit of easy-come-easy-go ^_^.
It's not a sim or even a sim-lite. If you want something like Elite with RPG elements thrown in? I'd look at Independence War 2 (you might enjoy some of the HUD elements taken from current combat vehicles). If you want something that's basically Freelancer... there's Darkstar One and many similar to it. There are others that have a more of a 4X thing like Beyond series.
Note that BTS has a demo available. While the game isn't complete (Early Access), I do think it's worth the time and money. There aren't many games out that are set in full 3D space, have full 3d / 6DOF movement and having you being a captain of a ship instead of yet another farmboy fighting evil gunmen with a laser sword.
Which is free... on Epic's Games Store ^_^
I'm 4 years late to the Rebel Galaxy party but I've been loving it the past week after it came out free on Epic. The left/right-only movement in RG I feel was a deliberate and very good gameplay choice. It's a simplified, arcade-y Elite Dangerous, and I think there's room for a game like that. I read a review that it's grindy, and you're just building up your ship to be better, etc. Well, hello...
It was limited by the systems it was designed with at the time. The scope of RG combined with a full space-flight axis system is best portrayed in games like Starpoint Gemini and the games in that series. This game takes a bit from SG, RG, FL (if you ever played modded servers and got to fly cap ships) and even Avorion in terms of flight styles mashed into one (my observation). I believe BtS will end up being a fantastic game with time.
It was only made 4 years ago :) There were full 3D space games in the 80's. Most of the game's mechanics are simplified, IMO for the sake of fast and furious gameplay. And also the ships you fly are big and slow. When the BTS demo finally started working for me, and I had to dock manually, I was wishing for auto-dock (which might exist and I just haven't seen it yet).
