1 more question, about the other ships i used, are you gonna sale or scrap into the game for the ships that arnt used anymore?
Although I'm surprised how bad the Explorer's stats are. I don't have difficulty when using it, but it's outclassed by everything in some way, and doesn't even get a "Jack of All Trades" sticker.
Also, I think there might be a stat or two missing in those comparisons. In my most recent playthrough I started in a Transporter, upgraded to Explorer. I noticed that with cannons and plasma mounted and firing it'd hit overheat after a short salvo, but the Explorer could handle much longer volleys of the same weapons. There's a value for the rate-of-overheat or firepower or something in play that we don't see.
Not sure what ship I should go for as a starter for a new playthrough... any recommendations? :/
Last time I used the Astral...
I went for the transporter.
The astral was more of a shield-tank, so now I'm trying the hull tank.
Might buy that small, fast ship, though.
The Astral has the most hardpoints, and they don't tell you that in the opening selection (but it's there on the website). Three utility hardpoints instead of one: that could be three boosts to shields, or three boosts to speed. The Astral can boost what it has under the hood the most. It also FIVE weapon hardpoints.
BUT the Transporter has a better gun layout for the four weapon hardpoints it has. Both upper and lower guns are centreline, with the ability fire off either side. That means if you line up your broadside correctly, you can be dropping fire from EIGHT guns on a target. I don't think the Astral can do that, the gun positions are just wrong.
The downside is overheating. The Astral may have a lot of guns and the Transporter may have a good gun arrangement, but I don't think any of the early ships are meant to handle putting out heavy fire for long anyway. It may be the wrong move to plan around having lots of guns.
The Thallium, on the other hand, has only three weapon hardpoints but is all about speed and agility. In early game that's a good thing to have, mostly because of missiles. Missiles ignore your shields, hit your hull, and increase your repair bill.
To stop missiles, you can either use a shield booster to make you temp invulnerable (which you may not find early game), or use missile interceptors (which you may not find in early game, and work erratically) or you can use speed to stretch their flight time until the missiles hit their maximum range (which the Thallium is best at), or stay out of missile range so they never fire them (which the Thallium is also best at).
I've found that pure speed - as in, all power to engines - can make you very difficult to hit, and not just against missiles. But then, that's my preference for gameplay. If you want to slug it out, probably an Astral with shield enhancements (if you can find them early game).
Of course, playing permadeath mode will give you blueprints from previous playthroughs, allowing you to build most any gear you want.
Warfare too, don’t remember seeing it anywhere yet.
