Rad is a play on words.
It's a measurement unit of radiation but it also qualifies something "cool"

Sometimes you hear these other slang in the game also. If you do the spin tricks, the voice sometimes says tubular.

Rad was use in a number of things back then. I remember there was an NES game called "Totally Rad". Not that the game was very good, but the name's always stuck in my head.

Ironically, that game also involved transformation, though not via radiation. The character was a magician's apprentice and had 3 different shape-shifting spells.
