Ive been a gamer my whole life and at 43 years of age I have found a game that truly lives up to my dreams as a kid. This is now my favourite ever game

Good stuff. I named a fellow player Jim, he proceeded to marry my wife. 10/10

I enjoy the game as I can join my daughters and grandchildren online, even though they are in different countries.

This is the first Steam game I ever bought. And man, I love it. This is also the very first Steam review I've ever done, as I'm new to Steam as of July 2021.

I bought a Quest 2 earlier this summer, because I saw videos of people playing Walking Dead: S&S, wirelessly... and I was like "what?" Blew my mind, and had to have that headset specifically for that game. And then Superhot VR, too... which so many people told me to experience... and it is such a dope game... but back to Surv1v3 and what led me here.

I saw videos and was like "yes". The blood splatters, the graphics, the 4-player co-op? What? Not that I do any co-op/online play (yet) but just the ability to do that, is amazing. The game is incredibly fun, solo.

And I hear only two people designed this game.... again, WHAT?! That's nuts. And incredibly cool.

I've learned so much about Steam VR / Quest 2 / Virtual Desktop in the last few weeks... my brain is overflowing with info. Thanks to helpful people online, I'm able to kill zombies/walkers wirelessly, with literally no lag, and it's just so incredibly satisfying.

For the DEVS.....
Small suggestions for Surv1v3, which would make it even more terrifying:

- Improve the sound of the zeds a little. Some of the grunts are too human-like, and sometimes outright funny or cheesy-sounding. If they snarled like in TWD, it would be infinitely more scary. Have a low, raspy snarl, and more of those sounds, when you see a group of them (7-10) on the street... if you heard that in your headphones...... you're noping right out of there (at least I would be). Can you guys add more sounds to their voices, and more sinister snarls?

- Have an option to remove the glowing eyes on the zeds, in the almost-infinite Game Options. It's cool and all but I had the game not show the glowing eyes right away with one coming at me, and it scared the absolute crap out of me and I thoroughly enjoyed blowing his head off. Legit. The dead stare is infinitely more scary than yellow, glowing eyes.

- Maybe have more supplies in the houses, instead of old food / pizza boxes. I hate opening doors, lockers, cabinets... and having nothing there but props that you can't use. Or maybe change it up / respawn the loot, every time you continue the game from where you last left off. Additionally-- cars should have more loot... medicine spray, food, melee weapons, etc. Small request but I think it would be great.

Absolutely amazing work, devs. LOVE this game.

I want to give a positive review but with some caveats because I do think there are places where this still needs some work!


POSITIVE NOTES:

- I played with my brother and we had an absolutely fantastic time. We laughed our way through this game, gleefully killing zombies and finding new ways to make that funny. I honestly don't think I'd have enjoyed this alone. I'm sure plenty of other people would, but a bulk of the enjoyment from this game came from the fact that I was playing with someone else and that comes with a lot of laughs. Seriously, play with friends if you can.

- Only 3% of people (as of the time I'm writing this) have beat the Story. I think that's a shame, and people are missing out. The story was fun and I actually loved the ending . I won't argue that it was completely original or groundbreaking but it still took me a bit by surprise and left me reflecting on my enjoyable experience with the game. I haven't been in Survival mode much yet (though I plan on doing more of that now that I've beat Story) and I know that is where most people are spending their time. But again, I would strongly recommend you get a friend (or two or three) and do Story.

- It seems a small thing but the music was really good. There is a song at the beginning of this game that you encounter multiple times in the game as well as an ending song and both are super good, and very atmospheric. It helped add a certain "mood" for us as we were entering the game each time

- There are some neat extra fun stuff in the form of gun and body sprays and helms. Just completely cosmetic but every time my brother and I would find one we were thrilled.

- This is surprisingly playable long term for a VR game. I personally find a lot of VR games to be "short burst" games only. I can get in and have a bit of fun for 30-60 minutes but kind of run out of steam after that point. Obviously this is going to vary by person, but for me, this game kept me going to meet goals and get to the next checkpoint. We played this every night until we beat it.


THINGS THAT NEED WORK/DEV ATTENTION:

- The very first and top problem I would mention is that it needs some more optimization. I've got a pretty decent gaming rig and by the third chapter of this game, I was running this on the lowest settings and still running into issues (especially in the more open areas). It wasn't enough to deter me from wanting to beat the game, but it's certainly the most frustrating thing I encountered

- Weapon play in this game isn't great. Not gonna lie, it wasn't mind blowing. Again, still had a great time. But when picking melee weapons especially, it felt like there were clear winners and clear losers because some of them just didn't work great. Machete felt wonky and hard to get a kill with. Found a sweet two handed neon sword, looked rad. Very difficult to handle and it was quickly discarded for something that got kills more reliably. I should note that I'm a very short gal at only 5'2" and maybe some aspects were tied to that, but I know some of them weren't as my brother had difficulty with the machete also and is much taller than I am.

- Touching on the note I made that was positive - those weapon and body sprays were very cool but there weren't enough of them. I feel like I only really found them in the third chapter (there was a bit in the second but definitely felt sparse). That is such an easy, fun way to spice up the game it feels like a miss that they don't pepper the entire game full of different sprays to add different effects to yourself or your weapons. Those little touches are the ones that keep a lot of people moving, in hopes of finding the next one and finding what it will look like. Definitely add more of those, devs! :)

- Another small nitpick but one that I feel would make a big difference if dealt with - you can open all kinds of drawers, cabinets and chests in this game. In all the drawers we opened though, we never found anything inside (to be clear, there were things inside cabinets all the time just specially not the drawers, like the drawers in a nightstand or a file cabinet). It seems a waste to allow people to open these things and there is never anything inside them. Start putting things in there! More of those body sprays and weapons sprays! Character skins! Just anything to make it feel worthwhile to open them.


That's it, I'm going to leave my review here and I will be diving into Survival mode as well but all in all, I recommend this game. 100% worth every penny I paid, nice work devs!

I am about 7 hours into the game so far and I am loving it. I have had a ton of fun so far and it just seems to be getting better. If you are someone who likes first person PVE shooters I highly recommend you pick this up. Devs are actively working on it and you can see that they are active in the discussions on steam as well answering questions and taking suggestions.

Disclaimer I have only finished the first Chapter. It was like 4 or 5 missions I think took about 5 hours.

What I like:

1.Great atmosphere- perfect dark gloomy town
2.Open map- You have a map of the area and you can get there however you want no linear path to follow.
3.Looting- Plenty of cars to search and a good number of the houses and other buildings are searchable. Better check those cabinets.
4.Gun play- feels good attachments like lasers and red dot sights are a huge help as iron sights in VR can be an issue sometimes
5.Realistic- No HUD....at all (how many rounds are left in my mag? IDK I forgot to count.Do I have an extra mag let me reach into my mag pouch and find out. How much HP do I have left well I am seeing bright red so probably not much.
6.Variety- something like 40 different zombie models so your not shooting and stabbing the same 3 people over and over.

Don't like:
1.Objective -Would love to see a section of your tablet where it shows what your obj is not just where it is. If I miss the dialogue due to zombie slayage I don't know why I am going to the green circle on the map.
2.Melee- Melee can take a while to get used to and even then it is kind of clunky sometimes.
3.Inventory Management- Magazine pouches and backpack inventory management can be a little clunky but nothing that has been a huge issue.

In conclusion I would recommend it has been a ton of fun so far and I look forward to continuing our play-through and then replaying it on harder difficulty.

To paraphrase an advert for a well known beer - "Probably the best zombie game in the world". Why do I say that...

1. The game is immersive and atmospheric. At the hard levels you feel the fear as you walk the streets or scour the sewers, hedging your approach in case a zombie comes hurtling around the corner at you. It's easy to accidently kill your teammate who you mistook for a zombie because you were so jumpy. But if you want to have a more relaxing time, play the game at the easiest level and you can take a gentle stroll (more or less) while you kill zombies and look for a pizza to eat (one of the several steam achievements). The immersion is partly due to the mechanics and the vast VR surrounding you have to explore in the story modes. It like living in a small 'Buffy' town with zombies instead of vampires, and with the sewers infiltrated with even more horrendous and vile creatures.

2. The game is addictive....once you've mastered the 'normal' level you can increase the tempo and ratch things up were its easy to miss a target and you're dead unless you try and anticipate the attacks. Planning and strategy is a must at the hardest (Nightmare) level - no good trying to blast your way thru the zombies or your bound to run out of bullets and die, unless of course your partner can save you. Besides guns there are other tools to help you master the levels - a 'sound' bomb that attracts zombies, zombie juice you pour over yourself to let you walk unnoticed past them, and you can even use bins to make a barricade for your own safety.

3. It's not your usual arcade/horde like zombie game, but if that's your thing then there are 'trials' which provide elements of it. One of my favourite aspects of surv1v3 is the 'Big Bird' trial (one of three trials) - you get to fly on a helicopter on a mission and kill zombies from afar. Note for motion sickness sufferers - the first time I flew on the helicopter it did make me queasy (I sufferer easily). But now I play this game without any problems - teleportation is possible but I never use it.

4. It has way more than the 15 hours advertised playing time. I'm not sure what this is based on, but given that there are 2 'story' mode chapters of 5 episodes each (with a 3rd chapter to come), 3 trials, and a survival mode which is imminent, I think you can conservatively double that taking into account just using 2 skill levels of play (there are 4 altogether).

It would be remiss not to mention some of the problems the game has had I can honestly say that there are very few that I've personally encountered, and none that are deal breakers. The one issue I had with aiming seems to be resolved now - 10 hours of play with no re-occurrence to date. I know for a fact that the devs are on the ball when trying to fix the issues that undoubtedly arise from a game like this. This has made for quite a smooth process during the last 5 months while I've been continually playing it.

All in all this is well worth the £20 price tag, and I would be quite happy to pay that just for the 2 chapters alone. I'm eager to try the new survival mode that is coming, but to be honest what I'm really looking forward to is playing the last 'Nowhere' chapter. Bring it on zombies!

It took me approximately 20 hours to complete the story campaign solo. Game has obvious heavy inspiration from Left 4 Dead. I would say it's a slower-paced L4D made from the ground up for VR. It's a very good indie game, but it definitely does have some jank to it. However, the core gameplay, while simple, is very fun & satisfying.

Game is running on the Unreal Engine. On my RTX 3080, I had steady 90 fps for most of the game, with only a few drops at some locations. You do have full locomotion, teleportation, or arm-swing, with smooth and snap turning available. You can play comfortably seated, as there is a button crouch and a bit of magnet hands as well.

I did not like the inventory system as I found it a bit clunky. I wasn't a big fan of the auto-saves, which were sometimes generous and other times definitely not. The map takes a while to get used to. It can be dark & you're lost and not sure exactly where to go until you learn to use the map. I played it on normal difficulty and found that as long as I went to safe houses along the way, I was usually well-stocked with supplies.

This game does reward tactical play. You can't just run in into situations. You have to know where you're going and know when to use melee. Head shots are rewarded, not just with faster kills, but with ammo conservation, so some skill is needed. I liked the level design, especially the Sewers where there's seemingly danger in every corner. Spatial audio is great. Playing smart is the way to go.l

At time of writing, I've played about an hour of this game. While I would recommend this game, I can't say that, in the same swing it's a must-buy, at least from my perspective. it's worth looking into if you have friends to play along with, and while enjoyable, it does have a few issues that could definitely be improved on.

Let's start with the positive. The game has a very simple premise and executes on it fairly well. You and up to three friends can play as survivors in a zombie apocalypse, moving across a large open map to collect supplies and weapons to help survive and defeat the ever growing horde. If I were to try and find a suitable comparison between two games on the VR platform, consider this game to be a light mix of Boneworks and Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, but there is a distinctive difference between the three to allow SURV1V3 to be its own product.

SURV1V3 offers a wide variety of weaponry that can be found and then further modified using parts within the world. To equip those modifications, you need to know how to add them, which in turn requires finding things like magazines or manuals that will let you then use those mods, be they laser sights or incendiary ammo. What stands out in regards to those weapons is the variety in their function, with pistols, shotguns, rifles, bows, swords, axes and even household items one might expect in the genre such as power drills. Melee weapons also have durability, and can get lodged in a zombie's body preventing them from being immediately preferable to ranged weapons.

At time of play, I had found about three or four zombie types, with your standard slow zombies, ones that can jog (though, mercifully not sprint) and zombies in hazmat suits that have some form of noxious cloud around them, but I couldn't tell you what that cloud does. The hazmat zombies I had found could run themselves, so at this time I don't know if there are non-running hazmat zombies. Zombies can be snuck up on, and much like in all zombie stories, can be killed by removing the head, though a number of the living dead weren't considerate enough to take off their hats when they died, so be wary of that. Zombies can lose limbs as they take damage, though removing a zombie's arms doesn't make it harmless.

As you play, there's a smart tablet you can use the check the map and objectives. You can see this tablet by 'grabbing' an area on the small of your back. Similarly, there's another tablet on your left wrist that tracks XP gain used to unlock things. Otherwise, the game has no HUD, which certainly helps with immersion and not knowing how many bullets you might have left. The screen will become more red as you take damage, which is about as much HUD as you're going to get.

I hadn't started the story as of yet, having instead gone straight into the core Survival mode to check how the core gameplay loop functions, so I cannot comment on the quality of the story.

I think the biggest thing for me that stands out in this game is the free roaming aspect. Unlike a wide variety of zombie games for the VR platform, there's a tangible element of survival and exploration, as opposed to other zombie games that function as corridor shooters, asking the player to move from one end to the other. While those other games can be fun in a cathartic sense, they don't hold the same survival part that help make it a tense experience. I think SURV1V3 has the ability to deliver on the survival aspect of the game.

I do have some gripes about it though. Firstly, SURV1V3's seated mode is not entirely functional. Seated mode doesn't snap your height to a specific point to simulate as if you were standing, but instead seems to either adjust your height to be smaller or otherwise remove the speed limitation as if you were constantly crouching. This makes fighting zombies in melee a frustration more than anything else, as you have to get passed their outstretched arms to land blows on the head and neck. It also makes things somewhat comical, as your arms, which the game thinks are much shorter, seem to stretch out like rubber when you reach out to grab something. In all, this may prove to be an accessibility issue for those who lack the ability to stand while in VR, and I would recommend the developers look into adjusting how seated mode functions to improve accessibility.

Secondly, I think some of the hitboxes in regards to weapons may need to be improved to be more forgiving. I was playing this game using an oculus quest adjusted to be able to access my Steam library, and a core problem I ran into while playing was the shape of the oculus controllers themselves. The plastic ring that sits above the thumbsticks and buttons of the Quest controllers and be an obstruction when attempting to pull back the slide on a pistol.

So, yeah. All in all, this game has massive potential, and feels like a genuine game rather than a short lived experience. I am eager to give this a go with some friends who may also be interested, and I hope the small gripes I have with the game are addressed, or at least considered as the developers continue to work on it.

I was interested in this game before release but didn't really pay a lot of attention to it later.
On the summer sales I decided to check my wishlist and damn, am I glad I did that!

This game seemed like Left 4 Dead in VR but I'd like to say it's a mixture of Dead Island (open world-ish) and Left 4 Dead (focus on guns)

This game must be the BEST vr zombie shooter out there.
I'll go through some details:


Storyline:
- The story of SURV1V3 starts from the intro level which I actually really liked.
While figuring out how the game works you get to know this person who speak to you on the radio.
You already know that this dude will be accompanying you throughout the whole story.
The story itself is confusing from time to time (see chapter 2's ending) but overall I will give it an 8/10


Gameplay:
- Smooth turning, hold to grip, and LOUD GUNSHOTS ALL THE WAY!
There's nothing as annoying but oh so cool to not be able to understand each other while letting off some rounds.
This makes for a very interesting experience with friends/randoms in co-op.
The melee system is good but could use some work. Blunt weapons like barbed or nailed baseball bats are epic but the machete and all other blades aren't that great in my eyes.
Guns on the other hand, are wonderful!
The reloading is pretty OK, the shooting is AWESOME and the blood splatters from headshots never cease to amuse me.
one critique of those firearms is that I can't seem to attach a holographic sight to the XM8 and that most weapons don't have iron sights...


Performance:
- Optimisation in VR games is extremely important. Too much lag and you'll start feeling dizzy, sick,...

Overall opinion and score:
This game (MADE BY 2 PEOPLE) should be a triple A game, no doubt about it.
I played 28 hours with my friend (had to replay some levels due to him not always being online) and those were the best 28 hours I've had in VR. This game seemed intimidating at first but now I'm in love with it.
If you're looking to buy this game you NEED to play this with a friend.
If you don't have anyone to play with, message me and I'll hop in whenever I'm available :)

This game deserves a 9,5/10
