You should ding a level at the final big fight so if you need more there you can get them.
This lets you kill the first big robot using the broken valve which drops a turret or two. You need 1 mech for the valve and 2 mech to deploy the turret.
When you are building a character simply select each starter weapon repeatedly ( I just cycle through all of them over and over.) and it gives you one qty (be it 5 sniper or 20 AR etc) of ammo for that starter weapon each time. So you can start with bulk ammo.
At worst engage and pull back from the final fight and let the npc ranger do the bulk of the work.
Cake. Even on SJ but until you know this then yeah getting caught short on sniper ammo is very, very normal.
As for crits I think you have been lucky.
Some SJ encounters do not seem to scale up well. Enemies are still very weak and in others they are stupidly strong based on their hp's anyway. I don't get it.
