You can check and see if it's in the holding pen to the right of the front entrance. You might have to drop it off manually before you retrain, though.

yea check the holding pen, usually when your switching characters, moving things about like that it will "stable" itself in the holding pen. At higher levels/animal skill even dogs will have 1000+ health and attack multiple per round, so any animal will do later in the game. But of course grab your Honey Badger when your level 10 control.
