New animal kennel feature with patch 1.4
So, I'm a little confused on the functionality of the new pet kennel feature. I just killed 3 different pets during a battle with friendly fire, assuming that I could go re-tame them again in the kennel when I got the chance. However, they are not saved to the kennel.

I reloaded a save before this battle and dismissed all the pets and dismissing them did save them all to the kennel. So, do you still lose pets if they die in battle, even from the kennel? If so, this really removes the usefulness of the kennel, as playing on supreme jerk its a guarantee all pets are gonna die at some point. Did I just make a mistake by not dismissing them right when I got them so they saved to kennel before actually using them?

Also, I am playing on perma-death, so I'm not sure if that is affecting pets saving to kennel upon death, or if you are just supposed to lose pets if they die even with the new kennel. Anyone know how it works?

Im afraid its just a pet manager. It would be nice, even if an optional tickbox at game start, to have the functionality you mention.

I like to use em but if one dies forever...I gotta reload xD
The only animal I'd want at my side in this game is the honey badger.

At that point, it's game over for entire planet.

Can't kill a bear...
I think it's just for collecting extra pets. I actually really like this because I usually only have 1 high-level animal whisperer and this way I can use him to get a bunch of pets and save them for when my other characters level up more or when one accidentally goes boom.
There was a perk in Wasteland 2 where your pets (or maybe it was just Goats.... don't remember) would spontaneously explode. I dunno, this just reminded me of that.

Yeah, after playing some more, a cat I had saved to the kennel died in combat and now he isn't available anymore in the kennel. I guess I was just assuming the kennel was going to take care of the issue of pets dieing every other battle due to sheer stupidity and friendly AOE/fire. Oh well, not a huge deal, just really makes the kennel somewhat useless to me unfortunately.

Of course, it really only matter with the special/unique pets, as most of the normal pets there are many that can be recruited all over the place. Already lost Major Tom and Billy and Jean on this run though, was hoping to play with them the whole play-through with kennel, but I guess it's not meant to be, as I'm definitely not going to reload everytime they die.

Lost Major Tom and Billy-Jean damn, must have had low animal whisperer with the corresponding low CON. Healing darts etc. are worth spending on those two and several other pets. On Supreme Jerk enemies only target animals rarely and usually only if they have no other targets

Lost the two I mentioned and Polly already, all in the first 20 hours. It's usually friendly fire that kills them in my experience. I will line up shots with shotgun with strike, AoE nuke rockets, or something else similar, shots I really need to take on supreme jerk to drop guys before they drop me. If I have to completely alter the way I play to "protect" the pets then they are indeed much more trouble they are worth. Obviously you don't directly control pets, so it's impossible to keep them out of friendly AOEs like it is with your actual team members. It's not a huge deal, I was just hoping the Kennel was going to address this, as in you would be able to go back and "rehire" them again upon death.

It actually would be nice to make pets immune to friendly fire, as I think that would go a long way in keeping them alive, but it's really only the few unique ones I didn't want to lose. Another option would be to have them revive able for a couple turns when they die, similar to actual team members. Right now, when they die they are gone instantly, and polly in particular is extremely fragile.
