Skill book bug?
So I just used a mechanic skill book on a level 5 mechanic skill character, instead of it going up to level 6 it jumped me up to level 7. I haven't tested this on other skills yet, but everytime I reload and use the skill book it always gives me the 2 points instead of 1.

Can't figure out the exact rule, but different books give different skill boost on different characters: sometime give 1, sometime give 2.

If you have a utility item or sometimes an armour piece that has the skill to match the book it gives 2 points. If you manage to have something like the 'harda$$' star utility item AND the hat that gives a point (also mechanic) I think you get 4 points if you use a book while wearing both.

This works I think for every point except the very last point as removing the utility item always removes that last point so best exploited early. If you pop a book that would give you two points while you have a utility item fitted and 8 points in the skill (+ utility for 9) you only get the one point. If you did it with 7 points (+ utility for 8) you would get the 2.

I am assuming its a bug but it works for me so I am not complaining.

AFAIK : the book gives you "SKill points amount needed for next rank" to a skill, if you have equipment that increase the skill he will missread the skillpoint amount needed. (the same way people say wearing +skill utility makes leveling up a skill more expensive)

BUT

The skills still only need their normal amount of point to be increased so it can lead to multiple level up

YET : The highest amount of skill points needed will always be the last level, so yeah you can wear utility to trick the book into giving 6 points withoutbeing level 9, but otherwise keep it to have maximum impact when you reach high score level

At least thats how I understood it

I can confirm that bug and here's my explanation:
If you read a book that teaches you the skill "x" the game calculates "recent value of x +1 = new value of x". Seems simple and correct BUT if you wear any item that increases the skill "x" while reading the book this calculation ist going to be wrong.
In my Let's Play I got a character with mechanics 4. I needed mechanics 7 for a certain action. That'swhy I equipped this character with 2 items that gave him +1 mechanics each. So he got 4 mechanics himself +2 mechanics from his gear. Than I gave him a book that should teach him mechanics +1. My calculation was 4+1+2=7 but the game gave mit 3 points in mechanics by reading the book! It calculated the characters recent value (4+2) and added 1 point. The result was taken as the new skill value. Wearing the mechanic +2 gear increased it further to 9.
If my explanation is right this should work with any skill book as long as you have gear that increases this skill.

Sounds good, I was wondering why I got 2 Hardass points for the price of one. But I'm not complaining and I'm cool so I deserve them.

But I digress the only thing that doesn't add up is what about skills that don't cost one more. Like the early low tier skills, is it still x+1?

Can't say you're right, but either you're wrong)

This worked for me one time (I think so), but it doesn't work in 100% such cases

Good theories, but sometimes 2 skillpoints added even if there is no buff item equipped, and even if there is no skill at all (from 0 to 2). And one time it doen't worked when I had eqquiped hat mechanics +1.

In my case the bug seems working in such way (playstation 4 is my platform):
- you press to read the book,
- it disappears from inventory, but menu "read/throw away" dont (it shows you nother item in this moment)
- you can quickly press read once again and it will dd one more point (the quickier the better)

three time press doesn't work)
