You can't. We can only hope that they make this possible in a future update.

You can't. You can take the risk of trying to field strip it if you have the required perks, but I think it can give you totally different mods. Apparently, some Rangers are barely smart enough to attach flashlights to weapons, but all of them are too dumb to remove them.

You'd think at rank 10 you would be able to remove mods on a weapon.

I know, right?
Every rifle scope I have ever attached to a weapon IRL is on there permanently... (not).

Armor is just as stupid.
Adding a metal plate into/onto armor X.. and you can't take it off.
It is just one of many lazy/simplified/"consoleized" game design choices.

I think they should give you the choice of destroying the weapon/armor to get the attachments back, at least.

Wait, does that also mean you can't replace it with a better one later? I just started playing this game and haven't experimented with modding yet.

That is rarely an issue, if ever.
You will want to replace your weapons frequently, as the level/damage on new ones goes up fairly quickly.
In fact, many people don't even use attachments until you hit mid game anyway, since you don't really need them, and they get "used up" if you do. That especially applies to the higher end ones.

But to answer your question, you can "replace" an attachment on a weapon, but the one there is gone.

Save up the Farsight Computer Assisted Scope and all of the range-enhancing 21mm, 32mm and 38mm scopes you find for later use when you've got good guns to put them on. They work really well on SMGs and I personally try to save up the FCAS for the PDW-01. I use at least one 38mm on a minigun. Also, I think you can upgrade the smaller scopes to larger ones via crafting, if I recall correctly. There are a limited number of those scopes, last I checked. Certain vendors will have like ONE scope when you first meet them, and that's it.

I also recommend you never sell any LED Matrix, Optical Sensor, or Combat Analysis Processor you find. Those components are used to make the various headgear mods that give better melee and ranged damage, which are good.

It's a bit scary selling anything in this game, even "junk."

They made all of the truly consumable items more or less strictly optional, like food, tobacco products, drugs, and liquor. Everything that might be thought of as reusable, like skill books, mods, etc was made consumable or "bind on equip" just to avoid power creep and as a money sink, I guess. It's not terribly consistent with basic common sense in many ways.

What's worse, a lot of those items which were "$75 junk" are now "components" and cannot be sold such that you'd get Antiques Appraiser triggers off of them, which is a great money loss compared to the old days. I fell like this fact alone makes the Prospector quirk worth taking now.

I would argue that it IS an issue. People DON'T use mods because they can't be recovered until you get your mid/end game weapons.
The barrel mods and magazine mods are quite common. So I add them as I find them. It is the range mods that are usually bought and I make sure to buy them as soon as I find them on a merchant, and I do use most of them on the shotguns and SMG's that I find.

That's because the mods that give range bonuses can only be bought. Every mod part has two basic groups. One can generally only be found and the other can generally only be bought.
