Mac: freeze on "select commander" screen
Have seen this twice now. When I hit the "select commander" button before starting a new campaign or on the planet selection screen in the tutorial, my cursor turns into the dreaded beach ball and the game freezes on a black screen. (I still hear background music though). Finally I command-tabbed out and force-quitted the executable.

I'm on macOS 10.14.6 (Mojave) on a 2019 iMac. I bought the Premium edition of the game, and I'm running with all DLC enabled but no mods or tweaks to the default settings. I was able to play through the whole first planet of the tutorial without any issues.

Hi Ph4n, the person above managed to resolve their issue by verifying the game files. Would you mind giving that a try?

I just made sure that I had the latest system updates, restarted, then verified game files, no luck. I've tried both ways (i.e. "start screen -> customize commanders", as well as "new planet > select commander")...

iMac 27" 2017, Mojave 10.14.6, no DLC, no mods. Tutorial game worked fine.

Alright, it was worth a shot. We'll look further into this. Are you running a Dedicated GPU in your iMac or just the integrated one?
ph4n May 28, 2020 @ 9:48am
Yes - I also tried reinstalling, but same same. GPU: built-in Radeon 580 8GB.

Same problem Age of Wonders: Planetfall Premium Edition, spinning beach ball after selecting commander customization, 2017 iMac, 4.2 Ghz Intel i7, 40 GB 2400 MHz DDR4, Radeon Pro 580 8 GB, MacOS Mojave 10.14.6

Just an update: the problem remains in the open beta version. Music plays, red screen, spinning rainbow ball of death...

Hey Guys, would you be able to send in your settings files to logs@triumphstudios.com? It would be very helpful in trying to reproduce this issue. The settings file can be found in ~/⁨Library⁩ ▸ ⁨Application Support⁩ ▸ ⁨Paradox Interactive⁩ ▸ ⁨Age of Wonders Planetfall⁩ ▸Config.

With your settings files we did get some graphical corruptions but not in the Select Commander screen. While we look further into those I'm going to ask you to try a few things.
  • Delete the settings.cfg, this causes the game to generate a fresh one when launched next time.
  • Lower the graphics settings to Medium.
  • Lower Graphics even further to Low.

No change, same problem.

Deleted the setting.cfg file.

Lowered graphics to Medium, restart for settings to take effect, Select Commander from New Planet Screen, Black screen, wait, cursor changes to spinning beachball freeze requiring a me to force quit.

Lowered the graphics setting to Low, it's already on low, that's the default setting also happens to be the setting it was on when I sent my setting.cfg to you, but sure, restart, no change same problem as above and before.

Also tested on Main Menu Commander Customization

Deleted the setting.cfg file.

Lowered graphics to Medium, restart, now select Commander Customization, nothing happens still on main menu, wait, then same spinning beach ball freeze, requiring a force quit.

Lowered the graphics setting to Low, restart, no change same problem as above and before.

Problem solved in new patch. Sweet - keep up the good work!
StarryWisdom Jun 12, 2020 @ 12:22pm
ph4n, really it's fixed for you? Because I'm still having the same problem as before, spinning beach ball.
ph4n Jun 12, 2020 @ 1:30pm
It is. V1.301.41960 works for me.

Well, on a whim I decided why not give it one more shot, I'll uninstall the game, re-download it, start it up, and see if it works.

That did it, everything is now working, so yup problem solved. I have no idea why that worked but good enough. :steamhappy:

Update:

Nope, it worked that one time. Started up the game again and it is once again displaying the same behavior as before. Spinning beach ball

I really have no idea....
