Simpler Map, Quicker Info Uptake?

Hello,

Compliments to all the graphic design and details. That said, a more simple map and icons, I feel, would make it easier to quickly see map information. The maps are VERY busy with all the detail. Not difficult to miss things, like weapons that drop from the "Orbital Weapons Cache", or a empire stash. Even units blend in a bit on the map, even with icons.

Is there an option I missed for better visual map interactions and information?
