Heroes in vehicles?
I'm having a hard time seeing why I would put a hero in a vehicle. Vehicles do provide health/armor/shields, but they seem weak compared to the benefits of other primary weapons. Are there good reasons to equip heroes with vehicles, or are they almost always more powerful in other roles?

Try starting as Dvar in Bastion to see why they can be good. Tier 3-4 weapons deal more damage indeed, but flying vehicles give great mobility and are less dependent on RNG since they are guaranteed by research.

vehicles are a viable alternative to weapons. you get some bonus defense stats and a different set of abilities compared to what you'd have with a gun or melee weapon.

and later on a hero with advanced pilot in a tier 3 vehicles can be as scary as a hero with a tier 4 rifle or sword.

also its just awesome to have your commander ride into battle on a tyrannodon or blow stuff up with a vanguard walker :)

Do not base your comparison on tier 4 weapons. They are very rare and you cannot rely on getting one that fits your build. Vehicles on the other hand you can plan around from the start and they are definitely not weak.

Other way around. Vehicles are so powerful, I have little justification for keeping heroes on foot. Then again, most of my preference comes from Vanguard, which has amazing vehicles. Really, though, even just the APC outclasses most weapons as a force multiplier.

Well, looks like I underestimated vehicles. Thanks for the thoughts and perspective.

Vehicles are also really good for logistics too. Want an all air army? Give your hero a jet. Hero took a lot of damage and lost his vehicle? pay energy and get him right back into the action, no mods lost. Putting your hero into a T3 arty has damage output comparable to T3 or even T4 weapon. You can also really up the max HP of the vehicle with vitality and vehicle heroes benefit heavily from the research you put out.

It's simply a safer but more costly alternative to farming encounters and ruins. You can always give the later heroes you get the T3 and T4 weapons you get from major sectors.
In addition to what everyone else said - its the only way to make a vehicle with 4 mod slots instead of the standard 3 for regular units.

and not forget the insane mod buyable for (mechanic) vehicles that regs 12 hp per combat turn, getable from autonoms.

The assambly mod is also nice, but better for non hero vehicles. The ghost tank from the syndikate is great as it is mobile and strong, In my current game my leader lead a 5 units of autonom core (the t4 unit) doomstack, Nice army, nearly 6 K on its own, and all reapair themselfes.

For normal vehicles the assembly mod is even crazier, you need only win the battle and all destroyed vehicles come back+ regeneration in combat.

I can't see why anybody would leave heroes on foot, actually.

You can get some really good T2 and T3 weapons early on with some luck. And a good T4 is basically a game ender. Plus it lets you focus on less military stuff so you can focus more on influence, operations\spells and covert operations.

Noone mentioned hoverbike. If you wanna know why vehicles are busted, just use a hoverbike. :winter2019joyfultearssnowman:

Access to mods for biological* or infantry units
Access to T3/T4 guns which are absolutely ripper. (and are found as loot more often than vehicles are, so they dont cost you resources)
Not paying the hefty ability point price for the piloting skill.
Not being vulnerable to anti-mechanical* skills (particularly if fighting synthesis)

*assuming you are not kirkro/amazon and do not want to split the research to research their vehicles
