Only 100 Hours of Gameplay?
I've been interested in this, but it seems like everyone reviewing this game seems to stop at about 100 hours. When I think of a 4x game, I usually expect closer to an average of 250+ hours, with thousands of hours being commonly seen, but I don't see that anywhere for this game. So is this just one of those "story focused" games that doesn't offer any replay value?

I think it's also important to realise that this isn't your typical 4X, Age of Wonders has always had a more War/Combat focus and been on the faster side. Games ending around turn 100/150 (earlier in the case of MP) is pretty common. The depth and replayability is in the different Factions and Secret Techs combinations, the insane stuff you can do with mods etc.

Don't forget though, that there are so many 4X's on the market, and people jump around (myself included)
If this were the 90's or 00's this would be different. So many good 4X's to pick from now it's crazy....

That's more a problem with reviewers than the game.

I've got considerably more than 100 hrs and I am still making new combinations and learning new things.

This game has legs.

Ah ok, I was just a bit concerned as it came out seemingly underwhelming, but with all these updates I was interested in it again. Thanks guys.

I don't know, not a lot of people are into writing reviews. I have 387 hours here, I don't write reviews :P

It's about replay value.

Me and my friends have roughly 600 hours total together, Each game is as fun as the last. Winger is right, its about replay value, each faction plays differently. so many mods to research and upgrade each unit.

The thread is built off an unstated assumption quantity (i.e. the number of hours someone plays something) equates to quality.

Looks like from the mouse by your name you bought the game, my suggestion, go play it and form your own opinion.

I bought it after reading this thread again and doing some research. I just didn't want to get into a Paradox DLC oversaturation (Not that I'm for or against that), without knowing firsthand if the game was a story game or a "sandbox" style like other strategy games. Nothing about if it was good or not, I just prefer games with loads of potential playtime when it comes to 4X strategy games rather than story driven ones.

I've put 80+ hours in the game and I'm waiting for the 2nd DLC. I really like this game but one issue I'm having with it is that there's no option for visible enemies to move faster in strategic maps, which takes forever for each turn.

I know simultaneous turn but it's not allowed in campaign so...

The campaign mode in this one is handled in a way that actually gives it a fair amount of replay value since the maps are heavily randomized and the decisions made in one scenario can substantially alter later ones, so it isn't the exact same experience every time.

Age of wonders has always had a big problem I think. I's a good game but I think under all the nice combat the 4x side is lacking. That's why people generally don't keep playing for all that long.
It does a lot better than Civ and Endless legend in some regards but this game is not as good and isn't as well rounded as them.

The games needs to be longer and the tech trees to be reworked in my opinion. There's variety but the game lacks depth in that variety.

You know you can just disable the Observe Mode so your camera doesn't move all over the map? That already speeds things up, disabling movement animations is also a option.

It isn't meant to be "well rounded."

And by that logic Civ isn't well rounded either because the combat is terrible!

Yeah are you a dev of the game? Don't speak about the design process of a game that you weren't involved in.
Combat in civ is fine it's been fine for a long time. It's not great but it's streamlined as MP games don't lend themselves to going through tons of tactical battles.
You can see that Civ 6 is streamlined for MP.

Edit:Just want to point out they likely didn't design the game to be too simple/short for the average 4x player. Just because it's "war focused". When it could easily be war focused and quite well rounded. You know and not play like babies first 4x. It could have a real early-mid-late game rather than just a late game. Like how long does it take to research the best stuff?
Also sorry for offending you fanboy ass 2k hours no excuse to simp for a game though.
