Choose Vanguard Promethean.
For your first game, just build troopers and go exploring, experiment with the firearms chain, get familiar with how research and cities work.
As you play more, up the difficulty and experiment with different mods, and try things like going heavy on Vanguard Bikers + laser mods + armour.

Now with combined 3000 hours of playtime in AOW3 and Planetfall, i still haven't played any of the campaigns. The random maps are just too much fun. In particular the empire mode has a strong longtime motivation factor.
So my advice is to just play random maps, read all the tooltips and look up all the keybinds (like for extra attack previews, or how to fire AOE into the air). If there is something you don't understand or cannot defeat ingame, ask in the forums.
There also is nothing against directly jumping into empire mode, though the maps there mostly have special mechanics. Like if your first map would have the extra marauder spawner mechanics or hazards, it may be too difficult to start with even with easy settings.
