revelations introduces anomalous sites(nice addition to the map that can give you anything from resources to high level heroes and gold sectors on exploration) and heritor tech that can be useful for any faction. It's also the cheapest dlc.
Revelations gives you the Heritor secret tech which I would find the hardest to play the game without. The Forgotten NPC faction is also one of the best as well. Their tier 4 Eater of the Dead unit is an absolute monster.
You also get anomalous sites to explore. Plus, you get the piggies in the wildlife. I don't know if the piggies are part of the free patch or not but they are my 'favourite' wildlife to fight against.
Once you've learned how to play the vanilla factions with those features, then add the new factions as they all play very differently from each other.
If you care about the story/campaign you should probably stick to the order the Expansions where released in. Outside of that I don't think there is specifically one Expansion that stands over the others.
