oh yes, very clearly a nod to the floating fat man. tons of pop culture references in this game. in fact, it's MOSTLY pop culture and old movie references.

It also occurred to me - the Psycho unit - probably a nod to Fallout, and the Raiders that use Psycho. LOVE it.

oh, and I'm currently doing the first syndicate campaign mission, and the thing with the spacers making a ship out of junk to leave the planet is ripped straight out of Fallout New Vegas.

ahh haven't seen that yet, but that is totally awesome (I mean my icon for my name is ripped out of FNV - the California New Republic rangers). I love these Devs. It's like every favorite science fiction / Dystopia theme there is. Alien, Starship Troopers, Dune, Fallout, Mad Max, even Star Wars (Psyumbra and laser swords).

He was literally Goro from Mortal Kombat with a whip.

(head smack) I just realized / remembered who the Factional insects are. They are from Star Frontiers! They look exactly alike! (or nearly). I haven't played that game in 30 years! Ha. Awesome.
