Why sci fi?
I loved age of wonders because it was one of the only fantasy based 4x games. All the other ones i know of dont even come close in comparison to aow3. And every other 4x game out there is sci fi. hasnt this been done to death? Master of oriion, civ, endless space 1 and 2. galc civ, stellaris... i could go on. point is i loved the fantasy and the amazing things you can do with the setting in a 4x. Have more hours in Aow3 then in other 4x game. Just seems silly to me that they cornered a market on fantasy and then went the generic 4x route of sci fi. Not saying at all that they need to please me im just one guy after all. But sci fi ? really? Why not literally anything else?

Not trying to come down on devs. Ill still propably give this game a shot because i love age of wonders. Wish the age of wonders team the best. I also really want Aow 4 to happen so i hope this game is a success for you regardless.

The question was likely asked at the Q&A section of the announcement. Hopefully there's a generally available video of the event.

I think this won't be exactly scifi. More like a mix of scifi and fantasy.

I'm expecting to see factions that are pretty standard scifi stuff: futuristic humans full of high tech weaponary, buildings, and such.

But I'm also expecting to see factions that are much more based on tradional fantasy. Lore-wise, they might be native habitants of the planet.

Of course, I'm just speculating, but it's the vibe I'm getting from it for now.

Ooh man... Science fiction and Age of Wonders like gameplay... This is looking so promising.

Nice to see that us Dutch are putting weight in the scale when it comes to game development.

Will be really nice to follow the development of this game over the coming months. I love the Age of Wonders fantasy setting (Been following since the pre-AOW 1 days... bought way to many copies :P) but Triumph Studios going Sci-Fi for this new game… I’m all for it!

Curious to learn more about this one!

Hi,

Thanks for the compliment on AoW3 : )>
On AoW:Planetfall being SciFi, all the games you mention are space 4x. We are a planet based 4X. So no spaceship, but lasers and hoover tanks. Imho, that makes AoW:PF rather different.

We call it mythological SciFi in the studio. So more positive and upbeat than grim dark.

Thanks sikbok for your reply. I know its too early to tell everything about the new game. Just felt like you had something unique, and really hit a homerun for me with your previous title. In which i mean beign a fantasy 4x game. That going to sci fi has me feeling kinda blah about the new game. Probably because your the only ones i know that have pulled it off really well. So having a lack of that i guess has gotten me more sour to the new title then it deserves. Just REALLY love aow 3 haha. Just want MORE fantasy 4x.

Hoover tanks? Just the thing for cleaning up the planet.

Slapping the Age of Wonders title on this game doesn't serve this title or fans of AoW. Sounds like an interesting new take on 4x; why not just give it an entirely new title?

Who says this isn't related to the Age of Wonders universe. No evidence that says it is or isn't.
So until we do know for sure, I'm willing to believe some connection exists.
CustodianV131 May 19, 2018 @ 10:37am
In the interview they did they sort of teased some connection with the AOW universe. Especially AOW 2 Shadow Magic was mentioned. So...
Thariorn May 19, 2018 @ 10:39am
well, the Shadow World would be an easy connections, given how its whole story arc is centered on an alien race invading other worlds/planets/dimensions to gahter nutrients.

I was worried for a moment there till I saw the dev's reply. I was worried that the premise was going to be like endless legend. I'm not saying that endless legend is a bad game but it's attempt at mixing fantasy and sci fi didn't appeal to me because it tilted far too heavily to the fatansy setting at the expense of sci-fi(only a footnote) whereby combat involved only medieval/magic weapons and not a single gun. That rubbed me wrong considering I just came from Endless Space.

If AOW:Planetfall was similar and featured a high tech setting but all civilizations used only primitive weapons like swords, bow+arrow, etc, it would have been a hard pass for me.

Well, it's not like we won't do anything but sci-fi after this title.

Whahahahaha, good one : D> Thanks for that.

As long as we still have the super in depth tactical combat and tons of stats/skills and stuff, this is going to be epic.

I was kind of disappointed when I saw that Triumph's new game would be science fiction, I admit. While there's plenty of sci-fi I like, fantasy has always been my preferred style of setting, and that's part of what made me love Age of Wonders in the first place.

That said, I do love Age of Wonders, so I'm very interested in seeing what you do with this new title and I'm definitely looking forward to giving it a try. I'm hoping it will exceed my expectations and make me love it as much as any Age of Wonders game, despite the change in setting.

Also not the biggest fan of sci-fi but lets wait and see how it looks. Just a little bit sad how fantasy keeps getting ignored and everybody wants sci-fi now.

I heard (so could still be wrong) that there will be at least a human race, a space dwarf race, an amazon elf race, so nothing extraordinary and imo rather meh
(humans, all women society amazons and dwarfs are such boring cliché and kind of overdone at this point, sorry, I hope the other races are more interesting)

I just hope you can customize your leader and heroes again, like in AoW 3. If they expand the customization so that every class, faction race etc. can be played in many different ways, its going to be a lot of fun.
